Default asc not available

hello, all.

so, I know you usually prefer more information, like engine codes, but this just happened as I parked at my apartment. I'll try to go to a shop and get codes pulled tomorrow. so, the problem:

as I parked, the engine stalled. I put in park, restarted, and finished pulling in spot, but I noticed "asc not available" and, I forget the other, something about engine something mode. I put in reverse, it went in gear. I put in drive, drove around the lot, it drove but would not allow acceleration.only at idle speed. I went to start my old car, and made sure it was capable of driving tomorrow, then went to check that code, for the proper wording of the engine restricted mode, but it was gone... started just fine, no more fault.... what can this be????!!!!!

hope this is something simple, please advise suggested route for troubleshooting.

thanks in advance,

Jon

Many possibilities, but one of the simplest is a weak battery. Stop at a auto parts store, have them load test the battery and also ask them to read any stored codes. If there are codes besides P1111 don't pay attention to the description, just record the actual codes an bring them here.

Ditto above!

If the battery voltage is below 12.5V, you will get this problem and other funny electrical problems. The computer modules start to act funny. Suggest you charge your battery. If you still have issues, try a hard reset. It it still does not work, time to get a new battery.

Electronic magic. I experience this often. In my case, I notice it whenever I leave the car unused for an extended period of time and the battery power drains somewhat. The car would still start and drive, but the dash would show the motor icon and the restricted performance, then it won't rev above 3000rpm. Continuous driving improves the battery power and the motor icon disappears and everything returns to normal.

In your case, don't loose any sleep. Just check your battery condition.

ok, I haven't had a chance to let my battery trickle charge yet, but the fault condition has not returned... kind of worries me, but I have heard so many issues relating to low battery that I will be charging it as soon as I can! I did get by the auto store and pulled codes. I got three:

P1647, P1000, and a repeat of the P1647. any knowledge of that code would be great help. probably just a vacuum leak, but we will see! any one know a good place to get a replacement for the plastic air passage piece that goes from the filter to the intake? (sorry don't know it's technical name)

ok, that link made me feel even more like a rookie mechanic! so there is a heater in an O2 sensor? and upstream, means the O2 sensor mounted on the catalytic converter? does that mean just change that sensor, or do I need to repair or replace a heater that goes to that sensor? wow, I'm such a charity case aint I? smh

The heater is part of the sensor. You can find some DIY replacement threads if you use the forum search.

The upstream sensor is located at the top of the catalyst, the downstream near the bottom, orin some cases in back of the secondary cat.

that was a good link! in my head, I was only recalling the sensor in the middle of the cat, which would have been the lower one. but now I clearly recall the upper one. ok, now new question..

is it okay to order one of these from ebay? and if so, how do you make certain you get the one for the correct bank? if I recall correctly, they were color coded, gray on one side, black on the other. or was the colors black for upper sensors both sides, and gray for lower both sides(or visa versa)

without being under the hood, when I did the tranny replacement, I know there were four plugs in the middle, and two were black, two were gray. I'm quite sure you couldn't plug the wrong one in, different shape. so just call a dealership and ask for the upper, or upstream O2 sensor for left bank, and they should be able to give me that part number and price, which I can then cross reference on ebay or amazon for best pricing. sound like a plan??
