Talking Is it a bad thing if your MAF sensor smoked?

The other day I was trying to start the engine after replacing the fuel pump on my 1998 Jaguar XJ8 and it backfired out the intake because it was flooded.
When that happened it blew the air intake pipe and the top of the air cleaner box right off. (the MAF sensor is attached to the top of the air cleaner box).

After the BOOM I saw that the MAF sensor had a wisp of smoke coming out of it and I could smell the electrical burning smell. I quickly disconnected it.

I have since cleaned it and and plugged it back in and no smoking or anything.

But the car has problems running @ idle it's fine but try to rev it past 4K and it stutters and i think it smell like it running rich.

Is there any way to test the MAF sensor Volts? ohms?

Thanks,
~Valiant

The symptoms are those of a bad MAF sensor.
If you've got an OBD code reader a bad MAF will throw a number of codes dpending on what's wrong.
Here's an article on how to test them off the car (for Toyota's but I'm pretty sure the pinouts are the same)

But, if you saw smoke coming out of it you can be pretty sure it is dead.
Don't drive the car until you fix it - you'll wreck the catalytic converters

Thanks Steve, I'll order a new MAF sensor and try that. I let everyone know if that fixes the problem.

Egads!

Every electrician KNOWS that all electrical devices need smoke to operate, once you let the smoke out, they are done

Well, I've replaced the MAF sensor and now it's doing something a bit different.
