Default Battery Replacement Inquiry

Old man winter has finally sat down here in lovely coastal NC. Now my battery is too drained to crank after 2-3 days of sitting dormant in freezing temps(FH).

My question is, as I install the new battery if I run one of those battery boosters that connect via the cigar lighter. Will that suffice to keep me from having to re-program everything, as well as the car's ECUs from re-learning !?

I will link the booster I plan to use.

As soon as you remove the negative cable the booster would no longer be a complete circuit and I doubt the booster would continue to work.

Yeah my basic knowledge of circuits told me as such, but after all it is a Jag, the host of many electrical eccentricities, so it was worth the proverbial shot lol.

On a Jaguar, as well as most cars theses days, the cigarette lighter circuit is powered through a relay. If that relay is pulled in when the power supply is connected tot he lighter, then it will continue to hold the circuit on until the voltage drops too low to hold the relay in.

There are other places to inject power to the bus to hold the controller memories, like the OBD plug. I think this has a risk of, at best, blowing a fuse, or worse damaging the wiring if a sudden high load is inadvertently connected, such as what might happen if the security alarm was set off and the lights began flashing.

Update : I did the booster in the accessory/cigar lighter outlet & had every thing set up for the battery switch so it was literally under 5 minutes to install. She fired right up, threw me a ghost "gear box fault" message that went away the next start (also 1st time I've ever seen that warning w/ this car) yet to resurface. All my settings were normal, no reprogramming necessary.

+1 for rapid battery replacement w/ booster !

Maybe just a temporary fix (those are always good); still, you know you need to drop by your local Advance Autoparts, have it load tested, and . . . .!

No sir. I meant by replacement that I had a brand new battery ready to go, I just didn't want to deal with everything resetting.

I had all the tools, the new batt. setting inches away(on a towel draped over trunk lip) as if it were open heart surgery to ensure the little booster kept the circuit, while I transplanted w/ lightening speed lol.

There really should be NOTHING that you would notice with "everything resetting" except maybe the radio presets

Better safe then sorry is my mantra lol, I've heard the ECU resets and the car runs rugged until it re-adjusts etc. Either way all's well, as the lion purrs tonight.

It took a couple of minutes for mine to reset when I bought a new battery last month, same same when they put in a new alternator. About the same time it takes for everything to stabilize after a hard reset. But . . . I like better safe than sorry.

Where did you buy the Ghibli? The Maserati sales manager at Charles Barker sold me three Land Rovers. Couple of blocks away.

I replaced my battery without having supplemental power during the swap. You will
reset time on the clock and that's about it. The engine relearns everything on its own.
Sometimes it becomes a little smarter too!
