Default Best OBD II scanner.

I know they are somewhat limited with our beasts but of all the commercial readily available ones which does the community here deem the best bang for the buck. I have some on my proverbial radar err scanner lol I will link below.

AutoLink® AL319 OBD II 49$ w/ Amazon Prime
Amazon.com: AutoLinkĀ® AL319 OBD II & CAN Domestic Asian and European Scan Tool OBD2: Automotive Amazon.com: AutoLinkĀ® AL319 OBD II & CAN Domestic Asian and European Scan Tool OBD2: Automotive

Truth be told I don't really see much difference between the 20$ ones & Bluetooth devices but I'd rather have a independent handheld unit.

Most of those are geared towards the Bluetooth or via the laptop interface it seems. I'd like a handheld unit.

I use the Actron CP9575 and keep it connected full time. Need to punch entry three times at start up and then get the data screen (I have mine set to read MAF on top, then temperature, with LTFTs on the bottom. ~$129 at Advance Auto Parts. www.actron.com.

I have had the cheaper version of your linked scanner for a number of years -- it's been great ... I paid about $30 bucks.

I picked up one from Harbor Freight - Lower end model and with their never ending supply of 20%off coupons I think I probably paid 20.00 for it and took home a free flashlight. It's a basic unit, but it does allow you to clear codes and between it and subsequent code searches online I haven't had anything I haven't been able to quickly ID. With that said, if you're expecting to pull ABS and other independent system codes you'll have to fork over a bit more cash.

I know you said you wanted a handheld unit - BUT the ability to do trend graphs is a highly useful feature!

Bumping this old thread.
I picked up a cheap scanner from Harbor Freight the Zurich ZR4S and while it reads the basic emissions codes it does not clear them. I get a "request sent" message after I tell it to erase the codes. According to the manual that means that a message was sent to the cars ECU to request the codes be deleted. I am assuming that this scanner is just not compatible with our cars

Any recommendation on one that works. Is the one listed by the OP still a viable option? I am not trying to spend a whole lot of money 40-60 bucks would be ideal.

I am aware of the scanner tool thread but its over 10 years old. I would like some current info.

Thank you,

That looks cool. I too would like to be able to access codes, and change settings, where appropriate/possible, on my UK 1998 XJ8. Will the above, cheap, BT OBDII device connect to my car, and the app would allow such changes? $20, total, or whatever the equivalent will be over here in the UK, sounds very reasonable, if it will work on my car.

It can access codes, reset errors, access data for real time monitoring etc. It is compatible w/ all X308s, be sure to select the dongle for whatever your phone operating system is IE Android or iOS.

Thank you sir.
I will consider this in the future. I ended up returning the scanner to Harbor Freight and got their even cheaper one, some different brand and it worked. Well it least read the codes and cleared them which was my main goal.

Thanks King Charles, I'll be sure to get the correct OS version. That was for sure something I'd already noticed, but good that you pointed it out. I do admit to being confused though, because I thought with these devices certain settings could be changed, but with them being described as 'scanners' I suppose not. There are one or two settings I would like to change, such as enabling the alarm chirps, and I suppose I need something different to do that?

Settings can't be changed without a tuner. Something very difficult if not impossible for these cars apparently.
The CRP 123 Professional by Launch is a great, inexpensive professional grade tool that besides pulling/resetting codes, it monitors 88 engine functions live, graphs them on a 4" color screen, and does ABS, Tranny, and airbags too for a little over $100.
