You just need to find a nice hump to jump over and you'll be there...

That is a great 6. I drove an 84 733i for a while and it was great fun. Since then, I've been lucky enough to have a host of vehicles (Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus,) but Jaguar has always captivated me.

Even in high school I said I would have a Jag... before I knew anything about them. I started with a 98 XJ8-L, sold it (sometimes the offer is too good to refuse), went to an 03 S-Type 4.2, drove that until 150k and someone rear ended it, and now I'm driving an 00 XJR. Once you've been bit by the Jag, there is no going back. You may stray, but you always come back.

I haven't found them to be any less reliable than any other luxury vehicle (I'm not counting Lexus...it's super reliable but absolutely soulless). With some due diligence on your part and a trusted mechanic, driving a Jag is a very fulfilling experience. Like many people here, I can quite describe it, but I love it.

Although I haven't asked for help directly, I find the members of this forum to be very knowledgeable and supportive. The information here has helped me tremendously. From the ticking noise on my 98, the Electronic Parking Brake Fault on the S-Type and most recently my timing chain tensioners on the XJR, this site has provided much guidance and insight.

Perform your due diligence and go into your acquisition with your eyes open and you'll be just fine. I too would say it is better to spend a little more on a vehicle with documented history that has been cared for, rather than spend less upfront and end up with a nightmare down the road. It's a 'pay now, or pay waaay more later' endeavor. If you can, try and stick with a one, maybe two owner car. All three of mine have been one owners with history and been exceptional.

Best of luck finding the cat that's right for you.

Sold my Bimmer on ebay

I'm waiting for the money. I'll have a $5500 budget for an XJR. If I wait until the end of Aug. I can throw in my college loan LOL! That could give me up to $9K. I think I might do that.

Hello good people.
this is my first post! Yaay! lol

Well, I am currently in the market for a XJR myself. I just signed up for this forum yesterday as I realize the importance of this affiliation.
I've been on
contour.org (6 different Contour SVT's (all sold))
Motorcitymarauders.com (2004 Marauder (sold))
maxima.org (2002 Maxima SE (6spd))
toyota-4runner.org (2000 4-Runner)

sorry, i drifted.....

anyway, my favorite body style is the 2001-2003, and from what I here, the safest.
(correct me if I am wrong)

I am currently looking at a 2003 XJR thats in Cleveland, OH (I'm in Detroit) with 98,800 miles and their asking $10.
It's the R series (Brembo brakes & Milan standard paint(?))
I do not believe service records are available.

Also considering a 1999 XJR with 110,xxx miles and they are asking $7900.
They say they have some service records but boast on the upkeep of the vehicle.
I am scare of the tensioners and tq converter.
This one is more local.

what do you guys think. The 2003 looks better and has the 12 spoke Jag rims that I love.
The 1999 is red (meh) and has the five star jag rims that I ....meh......am ok with.

Thanks in advance, for any thoughts! :-)

I'll do 7,900 on mine!

I'm in Ohio too.

Needs a few things, but all the main issues like tensioners are done, as well as a ton of other new stuff. Now has the R1 Package. I have a build thread on here if you wanna see the car.

Need to update the thread with all the new stuff I've done as well haha.

I am a BMW guy, have 2 850i's and an E30 convertible. The jag has a different feel to it as with any car really. My XJR has tonnes of torque and is a blast to drive and it does turn heads (not at too the same degree as the 850 but thats a different story). Servicing the Jag is similar, some jobs more complicated then others but all fairly well planned. One issue that I do have with the jag is parts. I find that it was far easier to find parts even the E31 then the XJR and parts prices for the Jag are higher. This may be an issue because I am located in Canada and things do tend to cost a fair amount more here, and I am deeply immersed in the community which helps with rare second hand items. Online also limits your choice of parts with the Jag as opposed to the BMW.

All that being said, I love my JAG. I have no plans on getting rid of it, the car makes you feel like a million bucks when you get behind the wheel and go.

If you're a BMW guy, you should have driven an XJR before selling your 6. These cars handle nothing like a BMW. The fit and finish or even the layout of the interior is nothing like a BMW.
