Default Bought vcm 1. Dud of course but why

Hi.
Just received Rotunda vcm 1 and it does not work. Of course, why it should? But as it seems to be genuine one I would like to know why it does not work.
I have no lights no power consumption at all when I feed 12V to the obd cable pin 16 and ground to pins 4 and 5.If I insert 12V to the external power socket I have all 5 leds turned on the vcm. Windows xp and jlr device tool does not recognise vcm when the leds are on. OBD cable measured ok. Opened up the vcm and there is no corrosion anywhere in the doublesided pcb s. I quess I have to start by measuring voltages at the mainboard. OBD Socket measured ok. What is the card reader for ?

I take first post somewhat back. Windows founds vcm as network controller and puts realtec network drivers to it. VCM recovery tool says it has updated the rom succesfully. I might have heard once Windows say blip when I done this first time.

Looked in to this more. It is supposed to found the usb lan converter cable as realtek. For some reason it does not mark the cable as connected. It does not respond me to the static ip adress or any adresses what I've found. That is of because windows sees the network cable to be as disconnected.
So is this faulty cable? Or Faulty vcm ? obd cable works. It is enbrassing to say that I was on the pin 9 not 16..

Opened it again. Took a good look for bad solder joints, craked joints, corrosion and other basic stuff. No faults what so ever. Then I cleaned every connectors inside and outside. This made difference. Now network cable is connected in windows. Sdd does not found it still. Ping to the ip addres works fine. FTP connection to the adress does not work. It just timeouts. Hooked oscilloscope up and measured all the few pinns what the usb cable has at the module side. There were only two dc voltages and three interference sinewaves. I set the ping to constantly ping the current ip adress and same time measured all of the pinns in vcm. Nothing changed.

I don't understand network stuf at the signal level at all. But should there be some clear signal at least one way? Interference sinewaves voltage were somewhere 200mV.

Now I have another one that is really close to work. It has correct leds that works correctly and ftp connection is fully working. It seems that my jaguar laptop is someway broken or something that with that I can not acces to ftp and vcm does not work with the car.
IDS 118 or 125 both tells me that vcm serial number is Unknown. I do remember that when I first plugged this on after I got it working it did have serial number on it. After uploading prom and software to it it has been Unknown.
With ftp connection I can download VCM.DAT and edit the file and upload it again. But with no use. What to do ? I have to check what is going on with the jaguar laptop. VCM is the only ub device that doesn't work on that mahcine.

Yep. Jaguar laptop is broken. With another one all weird stuff is gone. But vcm still doesn't communicate with the car. And ids lists vcm serial number as unknown.

If the Jaguar software is tied to the laptop...it is possible you can take the hard drive out, place it in a known working laptop and see if it will boot. It will probably cycle a few times finding new hardware
but you might get the Jaguar software working. It has been my understanding that the software is tied to it's original installation.

get 118.5 from somebody on here

if it does not immediately recognize the VCM and ask to update the code you have a problem. it can even see the crappy fly clones with the clicking relays and try but fail to flash it.

Every time the VCM is moved to a different computer, the IDS software wants to configure and 'update' the VCM to that computer.

When we at the Jaguar shop had to borrow the VCM from the Land Rover shop, we had to let the software 'do it's thing' and when they got it back they had to let their computer reconfigure back.

I just made a small discovery. I installed windows 7 to a another sdd disc and to that installed sdd/ids 131. After I let sdd do it's thing (update the vcm software) I went to it's settings. I've modified the serial number inside of VCM.DAT file to 12345678. That is showing in the sdd but not in the ids. What is going on ? Does IDS read it from somewhere else in the vcm or what ? And no, it does not work with the car. I'm guessing that the car portion of the vcm is broken on this unit. Led 1 on the vcm turns on and off when ids is trying to connect to the car.
My jaguar laptop is not the original tufbook.
I have 118.5, 120 and 131 ids versions.

As sdd is founding the serial number I went and tested vcm with mk1 XF, sdd is listing x250 with vcm. Of course it does not work. So something is going on with the car side of the vcm. Clearly broken one, again.

Now I can see where I could acces in my car via ids with working vcm. It does only list engine, transmission, suspension, instrument pack and abs. If I remember right. Where are body control module, seat control modules, hvac, security&locking module etc? Or are all of these modules what does not have own diagnostic functions ?

Did you flash the VCM. Yes or no? It can see a VCM loaded with another firmware but it can't talk to the car without being flashed first.

Yersterday I received fully working vcm.
What is funny is that it is original but it does not have pcmcia slot. It is simply never mounted to it's place. PCB has screw holes intact and all of the solder pads has had never solder in them. I don't mind about that. It worked with v131 sdd/ids with -97 xk8. So with 118.5 ids firmware it should work with my 2000 xjr. Finally after looking for 3 years or so. Best of all. It was found in the same city where I live.

IDS 118.5 is all you need for a 4.0 X100 or X308.
SDD has no advantage for a car that old.

WDS or IDS is all I use for the cars I work on. (up to 2006MY)
