Default Brake lamps come on then go out.

I have been struggling with brake light problems on my 2002 XJR and traced the problem to the output chips on the SLCM. I wired around the SLCM with a relay that closed on the brake pedal switch signal and then supplied power from a fused dedicated circuit. That has worked fine while I looked for a replacement SLCM that matched. The only problem was you got the Check Rear Lights message every time you stepped on the brakes. Finally found a suitable SLCM, removed the bypass relay, installed the replacement SLCM, and tried the brakes. The lamps appeared to work fine, but after you depress the pedal 3 or 4 times, they light then immediately start fading out, and within a second they are out and I get the Check Rear Lights message.
I thought it might be non OEM bulb issue, so I went to the dealer and bought now lamps and have the same problem with the new Jag bulbs.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Anyone have any advice?
Thanks

I assume the original SLCM did not light the brakes at all- Maybe you now have a bad module, but with different symptoms. You might look in the archives about sawing the module apart and changing the solid state switches (assuming you have some surface mount semicionductor soldering experience, or know someone who does.)
