Brake pad part number help....

Brake pad part number help....
I have an 01 xjr without the brembo brakes. I just got off the phone with the dealer and they tell me that the brake pads are the same for the regular and brembo with a price of $600 for pads alone. I think they must be mistaken as I have a hard time believing the pads are the same. What is the correct part number for pads. Also how do I tell if my car had 305 or 325mm rotors?

The easiest way to check the brake disc size is to measure it.
The standard XJR front pads have a part number: JLM 1829
Rear pads: JLM 21220
Checking the UK websites, I found these prices to give you a ballpark figure of the UK prices:
Front pads ( JLM 1829) : Brake Pad Kit Front - JLM1829 | Jaguar XJ8 X308 - XJR, Jaguar XK8 - XKR, Jaguar XJ40, Jaguar X300 - XJR | Jaguar | British Parts UK
Rear pads (JLM 21220) : Brake Pad Kit Rear - JLM21220 | Jaguar XJ8 X308 - XJR, Jaguar XK8 - XKR | Jaguar | British Parts UK
The above links show direct replacement Mintex pads for the standard XJR without the Brembo brakes option and, as you can see, the price is somewhat less than $600-even after taking the US/UK exchange rate into account. The supplier has daily deliveries to the USA & quotes a 2-3 day delivery time from the UK to the USA
So the choice really depends on how brutally you drive the car-if you're an all out track day addict & push your car to the limits all the time, then you could play safe & stay with the dealer option-or look around for proper performance pads at a better price.
Or you could go with the direct replacement parts for considerably less than the dealer prices, if you only drive hard on occasions & you drive normally for most of the time...

I like to stay with OEM pads. A few years back I was driving a honda accord with a set of NAPA premium brake pads. I was stuck in stop and go traffic for a few hours, in that time the brakes started to fade. Traffic picked up to around 80km/h, and suddenly the car in-front of me slammed on his/her brakes. My brake peddle went to the floor and the car kept on rolling. Fortunately, I was in the passing lane and able to swerve into the shoulder. Immediately drove my car to the mechanic where he told me about the joys of brake fade and how you should never skimp on brake pads.
Thanks for the help guys

From my experience you are looking at either the JLM 1829 with the sticky back or the MJE2001AB without the sticky back. At some point Jaguar stopped using the JLM 1829 and went entirely with the MJE pads. At a later point in time, the JLM 1829 was listed again. I think the JLM 1829 pads were always listed for the standard XJR brakes and never listed the MJE pads. My recommendation is to use the JLM 1829's with synthetic caliper grease at the contact points where the pad rides in the carrier bracket.
I have a full set of Akebono's on my car and while they do stop and produce nearly zero dust (as compared to the JLM 1829 massive amounts of dust) I still find myself wanting to put the JLM 1829's back on. Just my two cents there.

Do you find the JLM 1829 stop better? Or is it some other reason?

Is this a new car to you .... maybe your car was originally delivered with the "R" set up and it was changed out ... due to cost.
I will also agree with the original OE pads/ rotors on the standard XJR - they give excellent feedback and no warm up.
Many of the aftermarket pads require a higher peddle pressure -- especially noticeable on the twists.

People that spend $600 on the brake pads should not be on this forum! This is a DIY place!
About six weeks ago I purchased a set of cross drilled/slotted rotors and pads from a place in Costa Mesa, for $276 TOTAL (with CA Tax/shipping to my door....TOTAL cost!). I am VERY happy with the brakes (I installed everything myself). Just yesterday I had to stop on a dime (a fool was running a red light, and only God knows how many fools we have in CA!), and the brakes just GRAB. Very positive feedback on the normal braking, and a serious grab when you need it. No fade, no issues whatsoever.
I understand "OEM",.....yes I do. But my car was made 15 years ago! Technology is different today. As long as the appearance of my classic is not altered (LEDs, metal "rice" pedals, neon, carbon fiber etc.) I'm good. I WILL get modern, oils, additives, tires, brakes, air filters, etc. whenever I can.

I think that I will do some calling around and see who has a good price on OE stuff. One joy of living in Canada is that we don't get the deals like across the boarder in the USA. Those that do ship to us, can sometimes have a hefty duty charge attached.

It is a bit surprising how much more some items cost up north.
Danielsand -- while I agree that this forum has become more of a DIY forum in recent years the original setup is in no way outdated - placing drilled or slotted rotors and pads are not going to give the average driver any improvement and in fact will often produce more problems.
I'm in no way saying not to do what you want or that you will not be happy with your choice -- but my experience is that it is not worth it. Although ... Your feedback is important as it provides an alternative.
It is a shame that almost all the professionals no longer stop in to give any guidance -- They were often attacked.

I don't think there is a difference, they've been on there for maybe three years. I only think about getting them on there because of my own mental state. I'm not the biggest aftermarket junkie around. There are plenty of good parts out there but, in my mind, the best fit for brakes on my car has always been the 1829's. The akebono's are totally noise and dust free and stop well. No complaints but they aren't what it came with and that is where that tick starts to kick in......
Please don't hang me on my thoughts about the aftermarket things. Like I said, there are plenty of good and, in some cases, better pieces out there. I just have my opinion.

While the Akebono pads are technically aftermarket on the Jaguar -- they are an excellent product .... likewise I have often ordered Zimmerman rotors for some of my vehicles when available .. equally good ... I think better then some OE's
For the Jaguar the Akebono savings are not worth having any changes for me - although it has been a long time since I drove them back to back.
