Default Brembo Swap

Good Morning Gentlemen

You'll have to forgive my ignorance a bit here as I'm just wading into the wild world of leather and woodgrain. Being a muscle car car traditionally, there are some nuances I'll require assistance with along the way.

I'll try to keep this as short and simple as possible:

I have a 2001 XJR base - no phone, no GPS, no brembos

I found a fully loaded XJR that the owner is parting out. I'm interested in taking his Brembo system off and swapping it onto my car. (As well as the phone and GPS, but let's focus on the brakes for now)

Is there anything more involved with this than a simple swap of the pads/rotors and calipers? Or am I going to need hubs/axles, the whole bit as well?

Please advise.

Thank you,

Dave

Dave,

(I've moved this from General Tech Help section to the X308 section so you get the best response from members with the same model.)

There could be other model-specific factors to consider.

One thing I can point out about the swap as it was something I too was considering to my 01 XJR, is that you will require larger wheels as the brembo's will not clear the stock 18's. Also as a fellow Canadian, prepare for ridiculous prices for pads for that set-up. I was quoted $694 for front pads only from the Jaguar dealer in Thornhill. Good luck.

Regarding your phone and GPS, you may want to go the route of adding bluetooth through the factory phone wiring. I added the Parrot 9000, and now have a working phone system and turn by turn GPS through my car speakers.

Thanks for the info about the wheels, Wink. Should've considered that as well.

Do you know if I'm looking for anything more than just pads/rotors/calipers here?

I know you can order kits for the entire process. You may also need to get longer brake lines. I also know that you can get a quick overview of the process performed on an XK8 if you pull up the episode of wheeler dealers. I ended up just ordering standard brakes even though my heart wanted brembo's.

you may need to consider about the wheel clearance again like others mention here. some say adapter-spacer can do it .

that is the only thing keep me away now, if you can get the full loaded car parts, get its wheels also

The Brembo lines are different, they are listed as
a different part. So it's possible that the stock calipers'
original brake lines will not be a direct fit to the Brembo
caliper. One of the R1's listed options is "Improved braided
stainless brake lines".

It's all been covered by the other members, here's a re-cap.

Wheels,
Discs
Calipers/pads
Goodridge hoses

And the hubs. The discs are matched to the hubs, I read of cars (with a Brembo retrofit) that felt like warped the discs because the disc/hub faces aren't flat.
If you go for them make sure everything is minty clean when assembling if dodging the hubs route.
Use a stack of washers on 3 of your hub bolts to lock the disc to the hub and measure the disc runout on each corner, if there's any side to side movement, you'll need to look into it. If not, then all is golden

If you can get the lot cheap, and the throttle body/maf along with the ABS pump and steering rack you've done well Go for it!

Anyone else care to suggest other good parts to salvage?

The bolts are threadlocked, so a long breaker bar maybe needed to crack them loose. If you can get cap head allen high tensile bolts that match, and drill a couple of small holes in the side of the caps, this will help by wiring them instead of using threadlock. Some bolts come already for wiring also.
Some people shy away from Brembo because of the silly oem prices on discs and pads, but there's plenty of aftermarket makers that are reasonable cost.
If you drive the car in a spirited way then it's worthwhile, if not then it's not really needed, as the ATE system is enough for most driving.
The pro's are a fade free system, an almost extra sensory brake pedal, think about it and it's braking. Slightly better stopping power than stock, aesthetics - look the business with drilled discs.
Con's are price of oem parts, added dust, depending on pads, use ceramic, Hawk and Pagid are good news.
Before you fit them check the seals on each piston, they can split or go curly, about $200 for a full set. If they need new seals then why not get a fresh powder coat on them before the rebuild, decals can be bought off ebay.
