Default Buyer asked for tag number durring parts sale...strange?

We were discussing the price for a universal base-model XJ8 trim piece. At the end of the negotiation he asks for the tag number on the car. As you can see from my signature pic, I keep that confidential.

I was off-put by this request. I do not know what to make of it. What do you folks think?

So..have you been asked this before? With systems like LexisNexis and other big-brother databases that offer quick and cheap access like hourly motel, your tag number or the VIN of a car that you owned is equal in every way to simply giving someone your social security number. Most people have enough information on their Facebook page, or even in their Forum signatures, to steal their identity by passing a public records Q&A test. Lock it down people!

Sure I deal w/ a lot of Craigs list sales & lets just say it draws the "eccentrics" lol, if it has no bearing on the sale I don't divulge.

I can understand someone asking for the VIN or even paint/trim code - that's often essential to ensure the correct part.

Your registration (tag) number gives no useful information about the vehicle specification. The only justifiable reason I can think of for such a request is to check you are not selling parts from a stolen vehicle. Rather OTT for small trim pieces!

I have a friend that Listed a vehicle on Craigslist, and left the tag number visible, While driving it. he was pulled over, and accused of a hit and run! They had a description of the Jeep and the tag number! Fortunately the jeep wasn't wrecked, and he was able to prove where it was, when the accident occured. Otherwise he would have been charged with the hit and run. The officer told him this was a scam, that was being done using Craigslist. So yes do not give out the Tag # to a parts guy? No way.

I'm often surprised just how much personal information people give away on forums, this one not excluded. People post photos of their cars with number plates fully on show, state their exact location either in the location or signature and will happily post VIN numbers on the internet where everyone can see. If anyone wanted to get serious and steal their car or identity, then they only have themselves to blame.

I personally am very careful about the photos I post and will obscure not only mine but any other number plates in photos. I'll even hide my house number and any other clues about my home address if the photo is outside my house. In this day and age it really is important to protect yourself from identity theft.
