Default Can Bus faults XJ8 Sovereign (P1637 - P1647 - P1799)

Hello fellas!!

First of, i'm new to this forum, but i have read alot of your threads, and there seems to be quite a few Jaguar masterminds in here - so here goes.

I'm having some problems with a Jag XJ8 4,0 V8 from 12/1999.
The problem is that, the car has been in a showroom for a couple of years with a bad battery with no power on at all, then started up, moved a few meters then turnt off right after with no chance of getting it to charge the battery up.
It has happen numerous of times.

This has resulted in a shitload of errors in the dashboard (ASC not avalibale, gearbox fault, failsafe enginemode, high gearbox temp, incorrect parts fitted), and the the dashboard is completely dead besides of the infodisplay and the speed counter, that for some reason goes up to 70/130mph when ignition is turnt on + the gear selector stays in park.
And i'm getting the yellow engine and ABS mil lamps and 3 faultcodes - P1637, P1647 and P1799.

I have cleared the codes numerous times (with the Jaguar JDS scan tool) and hard resets with no luck , they are coming back the second i turn the ignition on

I have changed - Battery, ABS control module, Engine module, Transmission module, instrument cluster ( according to http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/XJ/4...%20failure.pdf )

I have done some measurements on the canbus wires ( on ABS, Engine, Transmission, instrument cluster and the gear selector modules) with a multimeter and with a scope, and all canbus signals/wiring are fine, and all the modules have a good power supply and ground. I have checked/cleaned the bulkhead brass in the left of the engine bay (standing in front og the vehicle) and all ground connection in the engine bay, under the center console and in the trunk.

So, i'm at a dead end here.
Have anyone on this forum experienced anything like this or know in which way i should go with this?

I have uploaded a video of the dash, when i start the engine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry for my bad gramma! Hope its readable..

You need a new battery, not recharge or a used battery. The computers and modules are very finicky regarding voltage levels. If your battery is below 12.5 volts before start up, you will get all the errors you have described. After you have got your new battery and before plugging in, do a hard reset by touching the negative battery cable to the positive battery cable to discharge the remaining voltage in the capacitors and to clear any residue bad memories in the modules. Then hook up the new battery, start up the car and I am sure your problems will have magically disappeared. I have experienced all the problems you have described and it all points to the battery. Time to go to the Mercedes forum and tell them the samething.... ;-)

BTW, with 11 volts, you could have fired up a non-computer controlled car without any problems. Oh, those were the days....

Hello XJR pilot

Thanks for your reply!

A brand new battery, and fully charged is now fitted - but all the same

Any other ideas?

So you have changed out four major modules and the problem still exists same as before.

Are all these modules just plug & play on an X308? No programming necessary? That would surprise me...

Have you connected the car to a WDS or IDS diagnostic unit? If not there might be other codes that have not been picked up, or perhaps some modules need programming?

Where are you? Denmark?

Hello Cambo

Thats correct - pretty much the only modules there need programming is the ECU module and the ABS module.

It's a IDS dianostic unit i'm using.

Correct again - i'm from Denmark

Little update.

After changing the battery i ahve now got the C1095(pump motor circuit failure) in the ABS module, and it will show up again right after deleting..

Interesting..

P1647 is ECM HO2S control malfunction – B bank, upstream, not really related to the CAN problems so why haven't you addressed that one separately?

Well that would suggest possibly a bad ABS module somehow, or at least some bad wiring to it?

I know abort the P1647 code, but wasn't really paying attention to it because it isen't CAN reladed - i just figured i would post every code i was getting

Yeah - the wiring to the ABS module are okay with no loose pin or anything.
But i have noticed that the 2 ABS modules i have (the one on the car and the one i'm trying to plug on, when testing) dosen't match up partnr. wise.

Module on the car : LNF2210AB
Module for testing :LNC2210BD

So the theory here is that maybe the module on the car is bad, and when i'm pluging the other module on, it will not work because of the wrong partnr.? I've been told that the partnr. need to match up, when changing the ABS module.

Are you able to program these modules with IDS? When you go into "Program New Module" does it give you the option to try it?

EDIT I wonder if the C1095(pump motor circuit failure) is related to these bad soldered joints mentioned here http://www.gusglikas.com/images/Auto...e%20Repair.pdf

EDIT2 and what about this http://forum.roadfly.com/archive/ind...12841336.html?

When i go on the IDS, i have the option to Configure new modules, but with that it just sort of resets the configuration on the ABS module and thats it.
Don't know if there should be a Program new modules function?

I will try and open up the ABS module due ti the first link you sent..

Really appreciate your time and help here Cambo

Yeah that's what I meant, Configure New Modules. So it doesn't actually load a new file to the module it just re-boots it. No worries I guess you can't do much with it then..

So it does seem then that you really do need to have the correct module for your exact model & options.

Hopefully Motorcarman comes along and sees this thread because I can't identify the modules with the numbers of LNF2210xx the parts catalog has different numbers to order with, and my cross-referencing cheat-sheet doesn't go back that far...

Motorcarman recently posted the part #s for the abs modules, and they are not the LNC/LNF # on the module. I don't recall whether it was here or the XK8 forum, but I'll try and find it. Anyway, I suspect you can't swap those two, have to have the same series.

The C1095 is definitely the solder connection, unless the pump motor is open circuit, which is unlikely.

That was quick. Here is the thread, not sure if it will help. The abs is not listed on the VCATS in the trunk, which means it is not programmable.

Thanks for the info RJ237 and Cambo

Little update.

Took the ABS module apart to see at the if there was some bad the solder connection - It looked like someone has bee trying to fix it before, because it wasn't the original clue that was holding it together - but the solder connection was looking fine, but i fixed them just to be sure... Now the C1095 code are gone, but unfortunately, the P1637 and P1799 are still present..

Is it only the solder connentions in the ABS module, that can be faulty or do we still have the ABS module as first suspect?

Any other abs faults should result in C codes.

But would an incompatible ABS module cause CAN faults? I don't know, hopefully someone does...

The "Incorrect Part Fitted" error message has me concerned. Did you put back the correct modules and parts the car came with and does that error message clear out?
