Excellent question, I was going to ask the same thing. There is some indication that mine has been dealer maintained but the service book is missing. I would like to know if the chain tensioners have been replaced, and see what else has been done to it. Can any Jag dealer call up service history ?

Thanks for that info. I am glad the throttle body was changed. I had a n/a XJ8 previously and it was fun to be cruising at 90mph and have the engine die! Hopefully I wont have that probem with this one. Shame the prev owner didnt do the chain tensioners though.
Cheers

Re chain tensioners replacement
Since the history you pulled did not show the work done I have got an estimate from my local dealer to do just this task. He has quoted $2440 (plus tax)for "timing chains and guides replacement". I thought I saw somewhere else in a previous thread that it should be about $1200.
Bearing in mind this is a precautionary task only (car drives beautifully, XJR 1999 75k mls) I would like to be more specific with what I want done. Am I right in thinking the issue is withthe "secondary timing chain tensioners", and nothing else ? No chains etc. Obviously if something else is worn or damaged then thats a seperate issue, but as far as I am aware I just want to do the replacement that the factory was doing under warranty originally.
Any comments appreciated.

Welli'm not an advanced auto tech (i'mnewly 24) anddon't know the specifics or what your dealer charges hourly, but I know Jaguar dealerships charge big bucks (sorry jag techs, but you know its true hah) for this job.
I'd recommend the full timing kit on Sir Kens site http://www.motorcarsltd.com/it's only $750 no core for everything and metal tensioner's. ValveCoverGasketsare seperate but are like $31/each so yeah. (can we make plugs heh) BTW free shipping on that!
Then you can take your full kit to your indepedant mechanic and just pay labor. Mines doing it for $700. your choice braaa!

atom, you know thats not a bad idea provided the kit includes everything, including any tooling needed ? I might just look into that. Trouble is going to be finding someone local I trust. I can trust the factory techs at the dealer. But some local guy who says "yeah yeah Ive worked Jags before......" but may be lying ? Theres a lot at stake (my lovely car!) Still, Im going to make some enquiries. Thanks, good idea.

$1200 is likely for secondary only. In my humble opinion, it is always better to do primary and secondary at the same time. It is reckless line of thought that the primaries wouldnt wear just like the secondaries. Just normally the secondary chain snaps, not the primary.
Definitly get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. And defintly get both done.
