Default Can't get her out of "Park"

On my 1998 XJ8 the release that clicks when you put your foot on the brake and allows you to move the gear selector ist not werking. Please help!......There is a hole on the panel too.....and when a nimrod (which is what I feel like) is inserted into the hole, it will release from the "Park" position. Is this how I have to do it from now on....

sounds like the solenoid lock is dead, to get at it you have to dismantle the J gate selector and remove the 'ski slope' trim. You can then test it. If it works on a battery, then it'll be either connection/switch/loom.

2 things come to mind.

Brake light switch faulty/failed.

'In Park' micro switch faulty or the little metal arm fell off.
