Well, I always had the plan in the back of my head of building a center console using the standard bench.
If you remove the center armrest, there is a whole lot of space to go all the way to the front center console.
Just following the shape of the seat might be where it gets less nice, but on a X300 with benches there should be some nice solutions.

Yeah, if you search thr internet, there are very nice integrated solutions.
However, what I don't like is the prominent place of the bottle in the center of the cabin ...
I also did not want to cut up any original part, and then the rear cushion is about the only place left, and replaceable to original in 1 minute (which I guess I will do at some point in time being tired of looking at the bottle ).

Anyway, finished the holder for now, and need to my efforts to sort out the dye once again.
The color is close, and I guess most people should not see the difference, but to me it is not close enough.
It still misses that creamy feeling of the original Ivory color.
Will see if I can sort it locally, otherwise will order in the UK (which is proven an exact match).

Well, have been struggling with the dye color in the last week.

First, the dye company did a pretty bad job, and was not really interested to solve it afterwards.
Although I understand a 100% match is impossible, what they delivered was simply wrong, farrrrr too grey and dark.

So I did the only possible thing left, took it in my own hands, refreshed my color knowledge, and bought some extra white and yellow dye.
Luckily my missus has a pretty good eye for color, and multiple samples and one failed attempt later, I finally managed to create something I can live with.

Happy to say the dying is finished (3 layers to get it covered), and I am slowly putting things together.
The car's rear is empty, so if the super typhoon coming at us is not going to play too much havoc, there should be some results next week.

By the way, the plastic tube over the piping worked fantastic.
I first re-dyed the piping, then covered them up until this afternoon.
Not a single spot of white on it.

Looking really good Eric, but how the heck did you manage to wing your finger dyeing? That wasn't one of your color blend attempts, was it?

I don't know, I never seem to work on something without cutting myself open ... but nothing what a tissue and some painters tape cant fix .

I spent the last 3 days sorting out how to install each part into the car, and it worked rather well.
All holes and brackets are already in the body, the wire loom and its relays just dropped in, and the padding under the seat just needed some careful cuts to allow for the seat frames and wires.

With Super typhoon Maria approaching fast, I am afraid I will need to wait buying some rivet nuts to secure the frames.
But it will allow me to work through all small issues left.

In the meantime it starts to look fantastic, the color works out perfect, and I am a very happy potato right now.

I had those ruched Connolly leather seats in my 2001 Vanden Plas Supercharged, a car I regret selling to this day. But you're Blighty, I suspect, so you'd be looking for Daimler seats from their top-line models.

My 2001 XJR's seats, also ivory but sportier than the ones you show here, are getting worn and I've called around for replacements. In every case I've been beaten to the punch by some savvy buyer. My theory is the X308 series, given the right preventive maintenance, is near-indestructible. But even if you take care of the leather, the front seats will show wear after 100k miles or so. And that's why replacements are so much in demand.

Huhh, I always thought that I had finished up this thread

To answer your question, I bought those necessary rivet nuts, and managed to install them with a home made tool in stead of a never-to-use-again factory tool.
After that, it was a rather straight forward action to put everything in place, connect electricity, and fix up some small issues.

After a while, I also decided to use the original, wider rear headrests of the Daimler interior, which required removing the embroidered "D", then a re-dye.
I also managed to purchase some tailor made sill plates, which, with its "Vanden Plas" inscription, was the perfect finishing touch.

Still love the result, although I have used the car far too little this year ...

That "D" would be perfect in my car due my last name, alas a man w/ a short wheelbase can dream of the personalized captain's chairs lol.

I resemble the tastes and preferences that motivated this project (scheming how to end up with a rear seat area like this, except black, and with X300 door cards, dash, and consoles), and respect the follow-through to make it happen. Hats off to you and Stu; well done!

Do the seats recline only via the bottom sliding forward, or is there room for them to recline without the bottom moving?

Are the seats basically the same as regular X308 VDP seats, just on different frames, or are the shapes or upholstery different somehow?

It was a lot of work, but I can still appreciate the interior every time I use the car.

The rear seats do indeed just recline on the bottom, but in general they are way more comfortable than the bench they replaced, even in upright position, they are much larger and offer more support.

On the differences between the X308 and X300, I am not sure.
I presume the fitting itself should be the same (all holes are in the X308 bodywork already, probably also in the X300).
On the leather, depends what you have, I think the X308 Daimler seats only came in the pattern I have, in ivory, cream and black.

Such an awesome thread!!... I read every detail.. great community work!!.. I live in Germany and have one of those Daimlers for a year now.. I cant believe you got rid of the D.. haha.. mine doesnt have the D.. It was only for the super charged.

Different question: have you ever thought of building a cooler for the champagne instead of that open "closet" ?

Yeah, no "D" in a Vanden Plas .... sucking for perfection .....
I did indeed had a brief moment of building a refrigerator, but common sense prevailed.
The crap in the bottle is 3 yrs old by now ... not gonne try that, not even chilled ...

That's a great soundtrack, because in most of the movie, it was the music that tied the scenes together as you watched the planes fly and the boats hurl in the waves as they advanced to save the lads....also the fighting ships during attack.
The movie itself was good, but had some bad editing...like his Spitfire burning on the beach (no motor and 2x4 framing).

Yeah, Stu, who I never met in person till today, will live on as my hero forever....
He sadly sold his X308, but is working on a beautiful classic touring-car project among some other classical cars.
One day .. one day ....

Oh snap, you got to meet Stu....hey, if you still have contact with him, ask him if he ever got that rear heated seat council and wiring completed I sent him. He's a good dude.

Stu's reply to you (and his x308 went nearby, so he is keeping a close eye on her .... sending me a pic every once a while ...):

"I’ve still got the wiring looms and stuff he sent me, I’m keeping them for if I ever get my X308 back".
