Car dies while driving

1999 Jaguar XJR dies while driving. Over the past week, the car has actually died while driving three or four times. A couple of times, it died completely and I was able to re-start it and drive with no more problems. A couple of other times, the car did not die completely, but just for a few seconds and then started running again normally. I do know that the ignition exciter ring is getting bad, as the car sometimes does not want to crank on the first try but will work if I turn the key off and on again. My son has an identical XJR and his did the same thing (exciter ring), but he had not had a problem with his car dying. Any ideas??

Well try replacing the ring first, then we can go from there....
Look for disconnections, splits in the induction system.
Have you read about the service recall for your vintage of car's throttle body, the engine control module get's a re-program for throttle calibration from a Jaguar service centre, the recall ended a while ago, but it still is relevant if the car stalls while driving.
You'll find lots on that subject by using the search function.
Good luck.

Stalling is getting worse; it happened about 6-8 times this morning. Fortunately, it has all been low-speed in town driving and I could just pull over and re-start the car. Would this be a symptom of a problem with the throttle body or the engine contol module? Any way to test for it? I hate to start purchasing expensive parts in order to find the problem.

does your car go into "limp home mode" or "failsafe mode"
mine did that about twice over a year period, and then a little bit later 5 times in one day. jaguar dealer finally concluded the throttle body required replacement. once the new throttle body was in, the issue has not occurred again and it's been 3 years or so. that being said, you could probably clean all of your throttle body electrical connections (there are several) and that could at least temporarily alleviate your issue.
good luck

Being a 99' it'll have the later TB so the link I posted has a quote from Quad, I couldn't be bothered typing the fix!

In it he tells how to cure the issue, but along with this is the flashed update that may be required from the dealer or indy specialist that has the IDS kit to do the job, so lets look at the options,
1. Clean the electrical connections> does it still do it?
2. Change the connectors to the updated kit>still occuring?
3. Then have the ECU flashed with the later throttle calibration software> still goosing?
4. Change out the throttle body.
It would help if you got the car scanned for codes, either a local motor factors can do this for you, or buy a cheap OBDII reader and see what it pulls.
