Unhappy Car at dealer

Hello friends,
Car is still at the Jaguar dealers here and, I just am not sure if I should go ahead and let them do what they say it "MIGHT" need to run again, they want $138.00 and hour labor, for me is crazy and, I am sorry but, I am not a millionaire.
I think I like good quality stuff but, I might have to just take $500.00 for it if that and, I don't know where to find a nice, mechanic that will help me and, I would pay him but not $138.00...

Do you have a detailed report of what they want to do?

Default repairs. . .

The mechanic just hand wrote what needs to be done: seal at the top of the gas tank is what needs to be replaced, the lines are good, but to be 100% once the car is running is when we will know at 100%. So the total was $673.56 but minus the $50 to bring it too $623.56 which is ( part at 48.06, labor at 625.50 (4.5hrs)

The tank is not an easy thing to get to to replace that seal, though the actual seal replacement is only 15 minutes. Its getting the tank out, they have to release the fuel lines underneath, then undo the hose connections from the filler neck, then undo the straps holding the tank in place, then slide it back to get to the retainer ring on the top of the tank. So time wise, I would say that to be correct and if its just that seal, then that is a good thing. I know it doesn't seem it from the cost, but it truly is.

Hi Elizabeth,

I'm sorry you're having to deal with a no-start issue and I know how frustrating it can be.

Good technicians should note all the issues they find on your vehicle, but that doesn't mean you need to worry about all of those issues right now. The only thing you need the dealer to focus on is getting the engine to start and run properly. Everything else can wait.

The dealer does not need to drain the fuel tank or replace the top seal in order to start the engine. It is unlikely the seal has anything to do with your no-start. They can test the engine using starter fluid. Also, they can easily pump out a small quantity of fuel from the tank into a clear container and allow it to decant for 30 minutes or so to see if water separates to the bottom of the container.

Likewise, the wheel speed sensor probably has nothing to do with your no-start so for now it can wait.

As Bob (motorcarman) and others stated repeatedly in your previous thread, the P1260 DTC suggests that the car has lost its configuration to your key. If the dealer technicians have not ruled out an immobilizer issue you should bring it to their attention and ask if they think it is part of your problem.

I agree that $138.00 per hour is expensive but it's typical of rates at luxury car dealerships. If the dealer will simply get the engine running and confirm the brakes function as cubist advised, you can pay them less than their total estimate and drive the car home. Then, when you're ready, you can have the remaining issues addressed by a good independent Jaguar or European shop that will likely charge lower hourly rates, and as RJ suggested, they may actually know our older Jaguars better than the dealer techs.

Looking forward to your next update.

Cheers,

Don

+1 Your key (s) needs to be reconfigured. And Bob and Don are spot on: all of these other issues are irrelevant until the thing starts and runs. Maybe a different dealer or Jag/Land Rover independent.

Default Still have not started my Jaguar

I did take you all suggestions and, did ask service advisor at the Jaguar dealer to ask mechanic.
They did not get back to me and, at this time to revitilize it is too much for me to handle anymore.
I have another car, 1995 mercury cougar and, had to put a part in it lately....to a tune of $335.00, and, inspection, and sticker so now the check engine light came on in it..
I really have taken care of this car and, it is not something I want to get rid of but, without enough funds and, I learned these are expensive cars to maintain.
I am just updating my situation and, hope you all enjoy your summer season.

Hi Elizabeth,

I am very sorry to hear that your Jaguar still has not started. It is true that maintaining and repairing Jaguars is very expensive at dealership prices. I wish you could find a good local independent mechanic who could help you at significantly lower cost. But I understand the challenge of finding someone, especially when the car won't run and must be towed.

Perhaps you could at least try posting a request in the Southwest Regional forum to see if one of our members in that region knows of a good independent Jaguar mechanic in the El Paso area who could at least give you some advice. Here's the link to that forum:

Jaguar Forums U.S. Southwest Regional

Cheers,

Don

I am not at all familiar with El Paso, other than being there for a couple of days about 10 yrs ago.
Saying that, this is the only Jaguar tech that came up on a search... https://www.jagshops.com/texas/chelmont-auto-repair

I would contact them and ask them about your situation and getting a quote from them. I would also do as Don said and check with someone in the link he gave to include asking about this Tech's reputation. A little CYB (cover your butt) never hurts before spending money.

Your car may not run, but if he wants the business, he may have a truck to pick it up for free (or discounted) to take to his shop.

I have the same issue and code however will not crank. I feel your pain, I tried everything before taking to a jaguar specialist workshop that have been unable to date, 4 weeks to identify the fault and until they can tell me what the repair entails there is no cost.

Default FOR Sale

I have to sell the car, the dealers called and, since it has been sitting for so long in their lot, they want to for either repair it or, put it in their storage, of course I have to pay for storage..
desperately trying to sell it and, I did go to see other car sellers and they would give me 500.00 dollars for it, so I have been sad and, depressed. I just wish I could afford these cars, I had a dream for a while and, it is over.

Hang on there

Dreams do come true

Check the nuts for being loose on the fuse link just Fwd of the positive battery post

The X308 has a history of this and causes problems with the electronics , may resolve your Pxxxx code

See page 51

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepairPhotos/jagxj2002.pdf

To bypass the key transponder remove the starter relay and temporary with a jumper wire sockets 3 and 5 to engage the starter

If you don't have the wire or tools for the jumper drop into a auto parts store and the staff will make one for you , Tell them it's for your Jaguar

Make the jumper with blade connectors in the pic

With a fully charged battery of 12.75 volts

Check that you do have fuel on board , jumper the # 1 fuel pump relay to fill the fuel rail as it may be dry , take a gas can

Once the engine lights off quickly remove the starter jumper

Questions , just ask
