Cassette Deck issues: Disk E - 01

My replacement CD cassette deck is malfunctioning. Intermittently, I am getting a Disk Error E-01. The radio manual says take it to the dealer. Which if the car was new and under warranty means they would replace it. Now 15 years old, need to fix it. Anybody have an idea of how to do that before I take it out of the car and disassemble the unit for cleaning and lubrication.
My original cassette deck would not load the CDs; I took it apart, cleaned it, but still wouldn't work. Ordered this unit off eBay; pretty dirty, as if it came from a junker and sat on a shelf. I think it is just dirty.
Anybody know exactly what to look for?

Thanks Kyle. I wish I had seen this before I bought the used unit. This is apparently the problem with my old unit. I may resurrect it and try this fix.
The E-01 disk error on the second unit is a different problem. Pulled the unit apart, cleaned it, lubed it. No joy. If I open the trunk, remove and reinsert the cassette, works fine until I turn it off -- then I have to start over.

Happened to mine, this is what I did...and works just fine now for over 10 months.
Just a thought.
