CATS suspension replacement
Hi all
I've got a 1998 XJR, that I've owned for over nine years, but its spent 2.5 years off the road. I've just got it taxed/MOT'd etc, and put new tyres and brakes all round (the main reason it went off the road).
I have noticed the suspension is very twitchy now, which I believe is due in part to old bushes, and with 150k on the clock, probably a good time to replace the dampers/springs. I think the dampers are CATS (I read they were standard on the XJR), and I have cables going into the top of the struts in the engine bay.
Do I need to get CATS dampers, or can I put in cheaper replacements (Bilstein?), this must have been done by other people, which ones are recommended?
After the not inconsiderable cost to get back on the road, the engine has developed a nasty fan-belt squeal, that I think is the water pump, as it now seems to have a substantial leak, needing a top-up every couple of days to clear the warning. Do water pump failures normally squeak, seriously hoping that the supercharger is ok (she sounds ok when revving).
Any help appreciated.
Thanks all - Dan

Water pumps are a weak link in this vintage of engine - replace it and the serpentine belt at the same time and it should be ok. Has it had the timing chain tensioner done? Why not do that at the same time you have the belts off?
Active dampers are green, but it sounds like its too early for cats technology though? I thought that was introduced on MY2001 cars, I'm probably wrong though!
Very twitchy? what does that mean exactly, look around for a lower mileage scrapper for replacement dampers.

Is there a link for more info on CATS? How similar is this to the Monroe / Volvo system that Volvo used on their R series and the modern P24 platform Volvos? Volvo calls it 4C and it's essencially just a traditional shock with a computer controlled valve arrangement. Is the Jag system air based?
