Changing transmission fluid, 02 XJR.
#22
Changed the fluid on Friday and it was a breeze.
Here's what I did :
1) Drained the pan - I got about 4 quarts out.
2) Cleaned out the pan.
3) Replaced the filter, gasket, and drain plug.
4) Re-installed the pan.
5) I put in 4 new quarts of the Valvoline Maxlife, ran it for half an hour, initially cycling through the gears, then sucked out the fluid again with my fluid extractor, via the dipstick tube. This time I only got 3 quarts out.
6) Re-filled again, to half way between the "cold" markings on the dipstick.
7) Drove for 20 mins, then measured the temp of the pan with a laser thermometer. 79C - close enough to 80C for me! The fluid was exactly half way between the 80C marks without further topping off.
The car has done 135K, with one transmission fluid change at 40K - so this fluid had done 95k. The fluid itself didn't look too bad, it was quite dark but had no bad smell, but there was a layer of black sludge at the bottom of the pan, and the filter was black inside.
Definitely time for a change.
I might give it a week or two then do one more extraction and replace.
The original problem, an occasional rough 1-2 shift, appears to be unchanged. Apart from that, the box shifts beautifully.
