Default Cheap Cam Timing Tools

Just a warning if you use one of these tool kits. JCNA's tool program has everything for loan except the cam locking bars, so I purchased the kit pictured here for about $45 delivered. Everything worked fine until I went to tension the chains when I noticed some cam rotation. It turned out the bosses on the bars were too long to totally lock the cams down, allowing a few degrees of rotation. I simply ground these down to .600" (from the underside of the bar to the bottom of the boss) - this got everything locked down properly. Recommend you check this measurement before disconnecting the timing gear if you use this tool.

What would be the correct measurement/height on the studs in order for the tool to firmly hold on to the cams?

E - I'm not certain I understand your question. The vertical distance from the bottom of the bar/flats on the cams to the plane of the head surface the tool bolts to is .600". That's the length of the bosses on the tool I mentioned above - I had to remove 15 thousandths (.015") from the bosses to get the tool to work properly. Hope that answers your question.
