Are you sure the brake lights are working properly by having someone look at the brake lights come on and off as someone uses the brake pedal??
The Security and Locking Control Module (SLCM) is known to fail and cause one or both rear brake light to stay on (malfunction).

I'm having this same issue. Intermittent warning message, had people outside the car check it several times when the message is present at various times and conditions, all lights fully functional. Could it just be the SLCM? It was very infrequent for a long time, but it's getting worse now (more frequent message, still no problem with the lights). I'm going to replace all of the light bulbs and see if it helps.

Here are some information from another post on the forum by member testpoint:
Does your cruise control work?? If does not work, then the "check rear lights" might be caused by intermittent failing brake pedal light switch. First try cleaning the contacts on the switch. If that does not fix it, then try replacing the switch with a new one.
