Default Chrome Trim peeling?

I noticed that the chrome trim along the bottom of each door window seems to be loosening, and that there was some kind of powder falling out from behind it when I tried to clean it.

(see attached pic)

I have read on other threads that you can remove the trim with dental floss/fishing line and then put it back with 3M tape, but I think this was actually for other models, not the X308.

Would it be ok to remove this trim in that manner, or am I opening a veritable can of worms? Are there any plastic bits that I should buy before I start?!

Chris
