Default Cleaning MAF with alcohol??

I am pretty sure my MAF has never been cleaned, and I have LTFT values way out.
I looked for the special MAF cleaner, but without results.
Seems not available on this island.

Now I read somewhere that you can also put the MAF in a bag full of 75% alcohol, shake it for a while, then let it dry.

Before doing so (I do not trust much on the internet ), is this a usable way of cleaning without negative results?
Any suggestions?

Eric

I've heard of associates spraying their's down with alcohol then air drying with no ill results.

Hi Eric,

I believe the principal qualities you want in a cleaning solution for the MAF sensor are the ability to dissolve any contaminants and varnish that have built up on the heated wire inside the MAF, no risk of causing corrosion or other damage in the MAF or its plastic housing, and the ability to completely evaporate without leaving any residue.

I do not know if 75% alcohol will dissolve the deposits on the MAFS wire, but I do know that often the remaining 25% of the solution may include water and perfume oils, so I would personally avoid using it on a MAFS.

According to the Material Safety Data Sheet for CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner, the primary ingredient (80-90%) is hydrotreated light Naptha:

http://www.apauto.com/SDS%20Branded/...CC%2005110.pdf

Chemically, this is similar or identical to common cigarette lighter fluid or charcoal lighter fluid, so if you can find a similar product in Taiwan, that might be better than alcohol:

Cheers,

Don

People have used carb cleaner OK and even brake cleaner! Do it off the car and make sure very dry before refit.

Worth looking with magnifying lens beforehand to see the brownish colour that should go to silver metal wire when clean.

My recollection is that carb cleaner contains corrosive ingredients.

Not really safe for a MAF sensor.

On the other hand, naptha sounds fine.

Consulting the MSDS for ingredients as suggested above
is a fine start.

Thanks to the suggestions above, I managed to buy some lighter fluid.

Using a flower spray bottle, managed to insert it with 'some' force, for several times, then an other session after 10 min soaking.
It certainly cleaned up, as the whole housing was covered in a light oil-like coating before, and the wires seem to be silver again.
Hard to see exact inside the confined space though.

Now drying with some cold air from a hair dryer, then back down to install.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, it prevented me from using the alcohol method altogether.

Eric

UPDATE: Installed, hard reset, and a ride.
All is back to normal, with the LTFT not exceeding -1 ~ +3 in various riding conditions, the way it should be.
Thanks again.
