Code P1722

Hey I have a question about this code. I have read what the code is but I am hoping it is not an A drum failure. It did not just come on out of the blue, It was self inflicted...there was a little lag going into reverse so I figured I would do a fluid and filter change, also went with OEM filter. So while doing that I figured I would replace the main pressure regulator valve with the "revised" one, seems easy enough. So I did all that using this forum as a guide with no problems. Filled transmission as per instructions. Upon test driving the car the transmission slips and goes into limp mode. Sometimes it will take off in 1st gear strong but then when I come to a stop and try to go again it slips and jerks and goes into limp mode again. Putting it in sport mode seemed to make a difference but then shifted erratic while driving through the neighborhood. There is now signifigant lag going into reverse. Turbine speed sensor was clean and so was fluid when removed. Hardly anything on the pan magnets. Transmission shifted smooth before I messed with it, although sometimes when coming to a stop it would not shift all the way down into 1st gear and you had to wait about 1 or 2 seconds at stop for it to fully downshift. I am hoping it's a speed sensor or something. Any ideas? Oh yeah, the vlave body bore showed no signs of scoring or wear. It's a 2001 XJ8 with 148k on it, not the original transmission.

I did pretty much the exact same service to my 01 XJ8 about 6,000 miles ago. I filled until it streamed out at about 47 C. Is was smooth but not just right. I jacked it up again and added until it streamed out at about 39 C.
It was better, but I jacked it up yet again and added fluid until it streamed out at 30 C. That was about 1,000 miles ago and it has not rough shifted since.

Yeah mine was streaming out at 39-40C. I filled the pan with engine off until it came out the hole, started engine ran through gears put plug in and let it heat up to around 40. Pulled plug and fluid came out pretty good. I would figure that I would have to add more fluid after engine was started and heated up?

That is what threw me off is the fact that it would not take any more fluid than the initial pan fill. So I took the pan down and low and behold the new filter did not come with the o-ring that seats it into the vlave body, so the pump was pulling in air and that's why I could not fill it. I put the O-ring on the filter, filled the pan and ran it and it took about 3 more quarts. Drove it to work today. No metal on turbine speed sensor and no metal pieces in pan. Hopefilly the revised main pressure regulator valve will extend the life of my A drum.
