Default CodeP0351 and Restricted Performance

I am getting a P0351 code and restricted performance message. Can someone give me the sequence step-by-step instructions on what I need to check first to diagnose the problem?

Relates to a faulty coil or its circuit. Try JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource for more info.

It's for Cylinder 1 Ignition coil. You have to take the coil cover off, you could try swapping it to another cylinder to see if the code moves.

Hi Curvycatxjr,

You can download the Diagnostic Trouble Code Summaries guide at the link below. The listing for P0351 gives possible causes, as outlined by JagV8 and JB:

Jaguar X308 AJ27 DTC Summaries Guide 2000

Bank A Cylinder 1 is the cylinder at the front of the engine (closest to the radiator) in the right hand bank as viewed from the driver's seat.

Remove the six screws, part 13, that secure the coil cover, part 12, to the camshaft cover, part 1. Note that the diagram shows parts oriented for Bank B. The parts for Bank A will be tilted to the left.

With the cover removed, you will see the tops of four ignition coils, part 2 in the diagram below. Remove the single screw that secures the coil for cylinder 1 at the front of the engine, and also remove the screw for the coil for cylinder 2 or 3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from both coils, slightly twisting and lifting the coils if necessary. With the electrical connectors disconnected, you can now carefully twist and pull each coil up until its lower end, a rubber boot, pops free from the spark plug. It may take quite a bit of force, but take care not to be too rough.

Install the coil from cylinder 1 in the other cylinder (2 or 3), and install the remaining coil in cylinder 1. Attach the electrical connectors and install the screws, but don't overtighten them.

If your scanner can clear the fault codes, do so, then drive the car to see if the CEL and/or Restricted Performance recurs. If so, scan to see if the code has moved to the cylinder with which you exchanged coils. P0352 indicates a misfire in cylinder 2; P0353 indicates cylinder 3. If the code moves, the coil is the prime suspect. If the code remains P0351, suspect a problem with the wiring harness or other parts of the circuit.

Cheers,

Don

Default Success!

Thanks so much for the directions guys! Changed out the coil. I got a defective one first time. I got a second one and the cat runs great with no codes or warning lights. I cleaned the throttle body while I was at it. Thanks again.

Default Restricted performance P0352, P0353, P0355,P0358

Took my ‘99 XK8 out yesterday for a nice ride in 80 degree weather. The car has been running great since I replaced all coils and spark plugs. After about 30 minutes, I got the “restricted performance” note on the dash and the car went into limp mode. Drove it about 2 miles back home and checked the codes.
I got: P0352, 0353, 0355, 0358 and P1368.
From what I have seen on this forum, I would next check the coils and plugs but as stated above, I replaced all of them less than 200 miles ago. The car has been performing well and about 50 miles ago, I cleaned the MAF which helped with a bit of hesitation in take-offs.
I will go back and examine the wiring to the coils and probably switch out some of them to see if the codes change.
Any other ideas before that?
Thanks in advance.
-Jim

Be aware of a fault with cars of a certain VIN range. (Service Action S484)

I did a few dozen over the years!!

Default Coils

I saved the old coils (AJ27 4-pin style) and I will swap out the ones that are showing faults and see what happens. When I changed them originally, there was only one coil showing up as bad. I tried drive the car a short distance today and no change.

Hi Jim,

Here are are the definition and possible causes of P0351-0358:

Since you have trouble codes for coils in both banks of the engine, it would be worth investigating the power supply for the coils via the ignition coil relay and the grounds referenced by the ECM. You can see the schematics for the coil and coil relay circuit on pdf page 35 and the ECM grounds on pdf page 34 of the Electrical Guide, which you can download here:

Jaguar X100 Electrical Guide 1999

Cheers,

Don
