Smile Which coil ?

I have just traced my intermitent misfire to the coil of cylinder 2. I'm not proud, I used a call out mechanic who read the codes and then used a close proximity sensor to show the coil was not firing (without touching / disconnecting the coil at all).

Rather stupidly, I reassembled before thinking of trying for loose connections / disconnecting reconnecting / electrical cleaner etc.

Is there any point looking for loose / connection / change plug or should I just purchase a coil now ???? (I believe the close proximity sensor means no high voltage output occuring. Coil had been in place for 30000 miles without being touched so connection failing on low voltage input would seem unlikely ???? What do you think ????)

Also which coil would it be for my June 2000 UK xj8 4 litre vin ending 18866 (as I can't understand the vin numbers on the britishparts.co.uk site as below) ???

Thanks,

Graham

Coil failure is not an uncommon occurrence. A code set by the fault and the external test might lead you to believe that you need to change the coil. Surly there is a look up chart on the coil pack but removing the connector and checking for 2 or 4 pins might be the quickest method.

Thanks,

I've gone ahead and taken the coil out again. It is indeed 4 pin.

The problem was intermitent. I've sprayed everything contact cleaner on low voltage connections, but unless anyone thinks otherwise I will go ahead with a new coil rather than reassemle with the old one in site. I assume everyone thinks it's time for a new coil ? Let me know if not.

Thanks again,

Graham

I tried that - worked for a while then came back. Finally got a used coil from a breaker for £15 and fitted it - fine ever since. Was a 4-pin ('99 Sovereign). My 2 cents - change it. If you should find it was something else you will have a spare at least
