Cold transmission issue

I have a 1998 XJR and could use some help. I recently had the shift cable adjusted because the shifter had gotten extremely loose, to the point that the car would not always shift into park. I am not sure if that's related, but before the adjustment once the car was in drive the actual shifting seemed fine.
Since getting it back, for a couple of days the transmission was shifting very slowly from 1st to 2nd, like it was in neutral for a second or two in the middle of the shift. I noticed at the time it seemed to go away when the car warmed up. Eventually it threw a code and I got an amber "transmission fault" message. When the fault message is showing the car will go into drive but not shift between gears at all. The light goes away when the car is restarted. I've since noted that if I start the car and let it warm up in park before trying to shift into drive the car will shift fine. I've checked the fluid and it is full.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...
