Default Connecting new battery blew out instrument panel and milage changed

When replacing the battery in 2003 xj8 upon reconnecting the new battery, the instument planel went nuts. All the gauges moved to extreme, the trans would not stay in gear, and panel lights were out. The dealer installed new "pack-intrument". Part was $1219. Everything was back to normal except the milage went from 82,660 to 170,799. No one knows how that was possible... Any ideas?

. . . welcome to the forum!

Sorry about the problem but who replaced the battery? Installed backwards?

I didn't think the mileage could be changed and apparently so did the dealer.

Steve, welcome to the forum, and I'm also sorry to hear of the problems. I'm a plain talking Brit, so please don't be offended by my blunt ways!

The only reason the "pack instrument" reads 170k is because it's from a car that's covered that mileage, simple, they used a second hand part and charged you what reads like full new price.
I'd be pee'd right off. Here in the UK we have mileage adjustment specialists that can call in and set the instrument panel or IPK to the last known reading of the original. It's takes minutes and costs relatively little, certainly sub $100. Now why couldn't the dealer do this, if nothing else, out of courtesy, shame on them.

thank you Sean... I suspected same. I will discuss with dealer. I have the title and MVA documents from 8/21/2010 showing 82660.

CAUSE ON THAT PACK WE CANNOT PROGRAM MILEAGE, JAGUAR UK DOES THAT ON A FAXED REPAIR ORDER TO THE STATED MILEAGE. ON THE LATER PACKS WE CAN PROGRAM IN MILEAGE ONLY ON "NEW PACKS" WITH 000 MILES AND WE HAVE TO CALL JAGUAR TO GET A 1TIME USE ENGINEERING CODE TO MAKE THE SDD A MILEAGE PROGRAMING CAPABLE. IF YOU END THE SESSION OR IT DOESNT BURN CORRECTLY YOU HAVE TO GET ANOTHER SEED CODE EACH TIME. IVE HAD 2 PACKS I HAD TO DO 3 TIMES CAUSE THEY WOULDNT TAKE. SO SHAME ON YOU FOR THINKING THEY COULD DO THAT

Brutal -
Does that mean that on the earlier packs you have to send them to the UK for programming, can't be done this side of the pond??

When theyre ordered new, and once programmed with mileage, it cannot be changed, by us or jaguar. But.....
I met a guy last yr 4 wheeling in moab utah that owns a speedo repair shop and he said he spent the bucks for the software and equipment to program mileage into and change any of the late model electronic ipacks.
Also mileage is also stored in other modules of the car, not just the i pack for anyone wanting to play with mileage numbers, just to keep you honest

Brutal,

Are you saying that the Jag dealer should be able to verify the real milage in another part of the system?
