Default Coolant fill tank and upper shock mount bushings

2002 xj Sport

The coolant fill tank on my car has started leaking/seeping very slightly. So time to change it. Don't want it to burst on a drive. Seems like a pretty straight forward job. Anything I should know before replacing it?

Also, what are some of the best upper shock mount bushings to buy?

.

The upper shock mount plates complete with bushings can be purchased very economically from Rock Auto. $18 bucks each Left and Right and easy to install. Several forum members have purchased these Rock Auto parts, myself included, and been very happy with them.

Looks like they also have the coolant recovery tank at a reasonable $105 bucks.

Or you could go OEM for just $126.00 (Item #9)

Any tips on removing the norma clips? I guess the cold and my numb fingers aren't letting me put enough pressure.

Those things are a pain! My only suggestion is careful use of some channel locks, but very careful use, you don't want to break those suckers.

I find that they are frustrating to remove, and then, out of the blue they come loose and you wonder how you did it!

Yeah I used pliers very carefully on one. I guess it made the slightest crack where you push down. Or maybe it was there before, no clue. But should be fine. Way too cold right now, so taking a break.

I'll try the channel locks.

Putting the slightest amount of pressure broke the one that is center on the coolant fill tank. The one that goes somewhere under the car. Sweet. What a dumb design, in my opinion. The other two plastic lines are dated 2014.

There is a tool to remove these which spread the ring from the inside on some cars it used to be located in the engine bay but is probably long gone now. I use a set of expanding circlip pliers at 90 deg to the thumb area.

Thanks Carnival Kid. To change the expansion plastic line, it seems it is behind the wheel well? Is it just a matter of removing the wheel, wheel well and there it is? I've done a few searches and couldn't find anything.

I have never changed that line, but I think if you follow the overflow pipe from the expansion tank, it runs across the top of the left fender, then 90 degrees down behind the ABS unit, then makes a 90 degree right turn, and if you shine a flashlight down there you can see the top of the light-colored plastic overflow tank which just sticks through a 2" hole in the bodywork. The pipe feeds through the screw top to the overflow tank...........and I think you can just pull the line out of the screw cap. There are bunches of wiring there, so you would have to be careful working around them, but I think it should be fairly easy to do

Got the bad coolant fill tank out. I noticed small metal shavings where the coolant was leaking from the fill tank. There are also the same tiny metal shavings in my coolant drain pan. Is this something to worry about?

Also, one of the hoses on the fill tank doesn't "snap" into place like the other two. Should I buy a new one? No matter how hard I push, it doesn't snap in.

For anyone that has to change the expansion hose. It's easy. Carnival kid is right. Simply unclip those tabs along the fender, pull the hose out from the tank. One side at a time. Putting the new hose is was kinda tricky. But I routed it slowly and looked at the pics I took prior to removing it. But man, those Norma clips are a PITA.

I think I would, better safe than sorry, they are not super expensive.

Good to hear that that went well

Not sure about the "metal shavings' in your old cooling tank, some have suggested that some of the leak-stop products have what look like metal filings as part of the product, others say deterioration of the coolant can sometime break down and produce similar looking filing debris, I can't think that it can be literal metal filings from the water jacket, water pump or radiator. Bit of a mystery............pity you can't post a pic.

I'll try it on a different device to post a pic of the metal shavings. Hopefully it'll work.

So I put lube on the o rings of the hose that doesn't snap into place. Well, now it does snap into place. But, you are still able to pull it out without opening the tabs on the side. While the other two, you can't do that. I'm not cheap by any means. But I'd like to have the car back on the road. So should I still by a new one?
