Default Coolant+oil...Not headgasket leak

Drove the 99 xjr around alittle this morning and when I came home and parked I noticed a trail of liquid behind the car. I felt the liquid with my fingers and it felt like oil.

I jacked up the car and found a HUGE amount of liquid leaking. Probably a big gulp size amount of liquid. It does not appear to be tranny fluid, and it appears to be clean yellowish oil. BUT I shinned a flasklight around looking for the leak and it looks like there is a GREENISH tint to the liquid. I'm assuming the liquid is Coolant + oil.

The leak looks like it's coming from the top of the transmission bell housing. There is a visible trail of liquid on both sides of the transmission case.

Lets all pray it's not the head gasket...What are other possible places for oil and coolant to mix. I want to fix this myself. Thanks in advance guys

ok heres some pics...sorry but I only have my cell phone camera which sucks.
As you can see the puddle is a good amount of liquid. After closer inspection of the liquid, it may be 100% antifreeze. BUT i'm still at a loss for why it would leak down the bellhousing

Perhaps the front trans seal? Even though I thought the 99 XJR had red trans fluid. That's weird.

most ATF i've seen is red. But who knows since the tranny in this car is sealed. Is the seal your talking about also called the Rear Main seal?

Coolant feels slippery (much more so than water) and can be yellow/green. I'd be looking for a cooling system leak.

BTW, what's that quad in the background? It sure is nice that AZ lets you license them and ride on roads.

It's a TRX 700xx honda. It's the one with IRS. MOST people dislike it for being a fat ***. I personaly love it. It's more comfortable on long rides than a solid axle quad, has GREAT suspension travel from the factory, and has a lot of potential (it's the quad that wins the Baja races)

Thanks for the replys. I'm leaning toward tearing the cowl and wheel well out and looking for a crack in the coolant resevoir.

That would be my first guess also - or a heater hose leading to the heater core?

I have a Yamaha Raptor 660, 2 Honda 400ex's and a Polaris 400 2-stroke. Regardless of what others have said, I've always thought the IRS 700 would be a great ride... glad you confirmed it. Maybe someday...

I am certainly more familiar with the N/A version but there are 'Norma' connections on each side of the engine that have a propensity to leak. Usually, they drip not pour. They are almost impossible to repair and most cut them out and replace with hose and clamps or replace the 'octopus' hose that includes the fittings.

I think it would be fun to do some mods to the 700 but it seems like once you start modding something, all reliability goes down the drain.
I bet that 400 2 stroke is freaky fast. I always liked big bore 2-strokes.

I've got a big test next week so I havent had time to tear into the jag yet...

One of my ex's has a full exhaust and K&N with air box lid off with proper jetting, and extended a-arms... it has been completely reliable, just as my stock one has been. Honda's, when treated with respect are just about bullet proof.

The Raptor (modded similarly) is my 'always needs something' bike, but oh my, the torque is sooo nice. The Polaris, which can be screamin' fast, has never given me a single problem.

Curious if you ever found out what the problem was?

I am curious to see if the OP is still on the forum: been ten years . . . I think I last saw him on this forum in '13.

The liquid would look more milkshake like if the oil + coolant were mixing. I agree likely the octopus hose or even the hoses running under the SC leaking in the valley and running down the back of the engine. If you can't identify the source visually get a pressure test with dye.
