Default Cooling Fan

I have noticed that when completing my journeys and turning off the ignition, the cooling fan comes on for about 5 minutes. (Note a/c not in use on journeys). I have spoken to a independent Jaguar garage and they have indicated I need to change the thermostat and water pump. Is this a bit extreme? If this is necessary, how difficult will it be?

Hi Doug,

It would help us be of the most accurate assistance if you could please tell us the year, model and engine details of your Jaguar. It's best to use your User Control Panel (User CP) to add this information to your signature so it appears in all your posts. I note that your username includes the model designation XK8 2-door GT (possibly an X100), but you have posted in the forum for the X308/XJ8 saloons/sedans.

If your Jag is an X308 or X100, your symptoms have been associated with a coolant thermostat that is stuck closed. Replacing the thermostat alone is simple, but if you have the original plastic thermostat housing, it is prudent to replace it with an upgraded aluminum version. Lots of information on the forums about this job, but this video will give you an idea of what's involved:

You may not need a new water pump to resolve your fan issue, but if your pump is original, it's a good idea to replace it preemptively. I don't know if this is the case in the U.K., but in the U.S. the pump Jaguar currently supplies as a replacement is the Airtex AW4124, which Rock Auto carries for around $37.00 plus tax and shipping.

A fan that won't shut off at all may be due to a stuck relay in the Radiator Fan Relay Control Module. For more information see this thread:

Cheers,

Don
