Default crankshaft pulley bolt removal

Is there anyway to remove the crankshaft bolt from the pulley without having to spend 150 for the removal tool? Any help would be appreciated thank you

Spend $129? Land Rover Jaguar Crankshaft Pulley Removal Installer Tool | eBay but you probably won't get free ground shipping to Hawaii..lol
Or, pull radiator and try an impact gun.
Or, make your own tool.

The crankshaft pulley is made in two pieces and is bonded together with rubber. The nut is torqued to around 325 pds. Without the tool you stand a very good chance of destroying the pulley

That's IF you try holding it by the OD.

Default Hoosier way

Gents,

An easy way to remove the Crank bolt is to remove the spark plugs. Fill the first cylinder with rope. Yep, get 1/4 inch nylon rope, figure out when the cylinder is full down in its stroke, and put in about 12 feet of nylon rope - you'll need a long thin screw driver to work it down the hole. Be cool - you don't want to damage the spark plug threads. Turn the bolt until the engine locks, get a long extension for your breaker bar, and "pop" goes the bolt.

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T SHOVE ALL THE ROPE IN - leave some hanging out so you can remove it later.

Again, 1/4 inch nylon rope - anything else might booger something else up.

I did mine by using the starter. Risky I know.

Put the long bar against the frame, making sure you have it set up the remove not tighten the bolt, and hit the starter.

For me it worked.

You may remove the bolt one way or the other but how are you going to later tighten it to the proper torque without the special tool?

.......................and for less than $40 each you can get the two proper tools delivered to your door.

The crank holding tool, for removal and assembly, and the self-centering harmonic balancer puller.

For supercharged engines, you need a crank pulley tool which includes an extension block:

A word to the wise, use EXTRA lock tight when you re-install that bolt. I learned the hard way.

Can't emphasize that last post enough. 2 galled collets and a trashed crank pulley later... though I think the PO ran it loose once and epoxied it in as a temp fix, worked fine til I R/I'd it. New to me pulley, new collet, and new crank bolt took care of it, hasn't budged since, and I hope I never have to remove it. Got some nice photos of trashed collets on one of my older threads. Get that bolt tight, I know the torque is pretty high, but I just pulled on a 3ft harbor freight breaker bar til it flexed so much I thought it was gonna snap, and that was "correct torque."

Wish I'd known about that ebay tool before too (though it might not work on SC engines?), would have saved me the hassle of making my own. Though I like my tool better

Default Crank holder

I used a standard generic snap on crank dampner puller. Works well even on SC deep pulley. To hold the crank while i tighten the puller i used and old Dodge truck diff tool with variable spanner pins .

I inserted the spanner pins into the slots on the puller and it held great while I torqued the balancer off in the opposite direction.

Starter is definitely the easiest method but i didn't take the risk at that time and while waiting for parts made lock tool out of iron bar and some screws, puller as on Ronn photo above

it's amazing what you can come up with when you have the time and like to save money..
. FYI. I did however pay good money for a quality cam locks and CPS crank lock tool kit.
