Daimler-Jaguar / Mercedes-Benz

This may be posted in the wrong section - but I have a curious question which likely impacts the UK market only. Daimler-Benz became Mercedes-Benz. Where does the connection of Daimler and Jaguar come from? I believe in the UK there were Jag and Daimler models of almost the same car.
Thanks

It is actually a different Daimler, a British firm started in Coventry in 1896. However this UK Daimler's origins can be traced back to the Daimler of Germany. They were taken over by Jaguar in around 1960 who took it of BSA. It was always associated with Jaguar even through the British Leyland days, and it is still used on cars in Europe today.
When a Jaguar Car is given a Daimler badge, it is also given the Vanden Plas body name. They are exclusive to the XJ body these days, though they did make Limousines called the 420. The Daimlers have all the features of the US Vanden Plas, though the top of the range Jaguar is normally known as a Jaguar Sovereign (like mine) but lacks features such as the picnic tables and some other minor items.
The reason the Daimler Vanden Plas name isn't used in the USA is because it was feared that it may be confused with the Daimler-Chrysler group.
Hope this answers your question

That's it, in a nutshell. Gottleib Daimler sold the license to use the name to a Brit manufacturing company. I think it is considered Britain's oldest car builder.
The name wasn't/isn't used in North America because nobody other than Daimler Benz has license to do so. Sorta like a copyright or trademark thing. This predates by decades the existence of Daimler-Chrysler....which lasted only from 1998-2007.
Didn't Jaguar drop the Daimler line in 2006? Or did I hear wrong?
Cheers
