My VIN is: SAJJJALG4CR812xxx (the 3x stand for a very low VIN not far from the 600th built X308 )

Going by the list above, my car can't be decoded.

The 3rd J isn't in the list up top. But I guess it would mean XJ Executive.
The C isn't in the list above. Means I guess early 1998 or preproduction model.

No VIN decoder works properly on this...

Going with the decoding sheet linked to in my post above, your VIN would translate as:

UK, Jaguar, Jaguar, Jaguar, XJ6 Executive, Standard (Market), Short Wheelbase, 3.2 litre, Auto LHD, X308 (see comments in my post above), Europe

Does this fit with your actual car?

Working from your VIN using the sheet linked to generates the following:

UK, Jaguar, Jaguar, Daimler, Daimler, Standard Market, Long Wheelbase, 4 litre supercharged, Auto LHD, X308 (see earlier comments), Europe.

This looks like it works properly - assuming your car is LHD?

Having figured out (I think) my VIN, I have a question relating to the other numbers on the VIN plate. My plate is:

I have no idea what the top number is - can anyone advise?

I understand the VIN number.

For the weights, the handbook notes the first row as the gross vehicle weight - not sure why there are two figures here - are they wet and dry weights?

The handbook notes the second row as the gross train weight, with the following rows as the max axle loading for the front and rear axles respectively.

I think I understand the bottom codes; first is the paint code (for my car it is Titanium mica metallic), then the trim code (Nimbus grey for my car), and then the carpet code (EN - I cannot find what this translates to in terms of colour?)

Thanks in advance for any help
