Hi, I found a 2001 Jaguar XJR that I am very interested in buying. It has 86k miles, very good condition, good carfax, and its selling for $8400( good price?). I would have jumped on it by now, but I am afraid that this car might also have the tensioner problem. My questions are: Does the 01 xjr also suffer from the tensioner problem? Is $8400 a good, fair, rip off price? Any way to know if the tensioner have been replaced by looking at the engine # or to see if it even has the problem by looking at the vin?
I appreciate all the help I can get in answering these questions.
Thanks

I dont remember when Jag started useing the updated tensioners on production, but if they dont have records showing you dont know without pulling a cam cover and looking. And thats a great price if its well maintained, otherwise it could be adjusted by them to pay for needed repairs that you dont know about.

Well, the carfax report shows the vehicle was taken to a jag dealer for "vehicle service" and "engine service" in 2006, but that could mean anything. The VIN# is SAJDA15B51MF22586. If anyone can tell from the number or can look up the number to see if the tensioners have been replaced, I'll really appreciate the effort.

David,
Price sounds good. Tensioner revision was introduced at engine number 01 08 13 0000. This number is a date code, and does not correlate directly with VIN number or vehicle build date. On an 01 car, you have to read it from the vertical rib on the left side of the cylinder block.
It's a fair bet that the '01 you are looking at has an engine preceding the magic number, so you only have third generation tensioners if they have been changed since '02.Add my voteto pulling a cam cover and seeing what is fitted.
