I keep reading about horror stories when it comes to tensioners and other engine issues and wanted to make sure mine is ok.

has the sound changed at all? just wondering why you've posted a video. A cold start up with the video recorder in a fixed position would be better, if you're concerned about tensioners, how about checking them out, or have them checked out. Seeing as your car is pre metal tensioners, it will require changing at some point, sooner rather than later. How many miles has it done?

 

My 02 XJR has no unusual sounds. No different than any V8 engine running.

Obviously on start up with the hood raised -- the increased RPMs are louder but the fact that it is supercharged adds almost nothing when at idle.


After driving the car for a while and everything is fully warmed the engine is very quiet - you can just make out the sound from the supercharger if you "put you ear to it"

I agree with Sean -- The video needs to start with the car off so any background noise from say wind over the microphone is evident.

 

The engine has 92k miles on it. It was replaced in 05 by Jaguar of mobile. Hopefully they replaced it with an engine with metal tensioners. I've contacted them to find out.
