Default Door lock question

The lock on my right rear door has stopped operating ('99 XJ8). It is stuck in the unlocked position. I cannot lock the door manually either. When I push the button down it pops back up. Is the actuator gone?

I have to get this fixed, somehow. I work in a location where vehicles must be secure, and I was called to my car this morning because of this malfunctioning lock. One somewhat good piece of news - after pushing on it several times and using the remote to toggle the locks, I was finally able to lock the door manually. If I use the remote after I do this the door will unlock, but not lock again and I have to repeat the process.

This probably tells me it's a sticking actuator, since it will unlock after I lock it manually.

Hi there, I wrote up directions on how to replace your door actuator here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=32658

Hopefully it may help you out in fixing your problem. Even as a tempory fix you could unhook the motor arm from the lock, and keep it locked until you get a new motor. Hope you haven't got into anymore trouble at work!! S.

Thanks for the link. I work at a prison, and they are understandably paranoid about any vehicle being left unsecured in the parking lot. Fortunately I wasn't carrying anything in the car that would be considered contraband on state property, because by protocol they had to search the car since it was found with a door unlocked.

I will probably take your advice regarding unhooking the motor arm as a temporary measure. I'm going to do a little shopping before plunking down cash for an actuator, because even the salvage ones are expensive.

That makes sense I suppose, an un locked car is an easy way out for a crim.

As crazy as this sounds, try taking a look aroung British Ebay (ebay.co.uk) because those parts are a lot cheaper here, and I mean a lot!! Even with postage to USA the total would still be less than some of the Jag parts I see in US Ebay. I got one for mine from a 02 XJ8 for about £20.

Default same problem

I had this problem with my left rear door. Mine would unlock electrically, but only lock manually. I considered replacing the actuator, but I when I was replacing the speakers, I decided to lube all the hinge points to see if that worked. I had noticed that the locks seemed sensitive so that they wouldn't be inadvertantly locked when the doors aren't closed completely or if something else was causing a hang up. Well this worked like a charm and haven't had any issues for about a month now. A lot cheaper than an actuator.
