Door locking issue
Greetings all, yesterday on my 02 XJR the key fob stopped working. I pulled out rage spare & it too was unable to lock or unlock the doors. I am unable to lock the door with the key.
If i get in to the car & press the door lock button on the dash it does indeed lock the doors.
I did disconnect the negative cable on the battery for 5+ minutes & reconnect with no change to my situation.
Any pointers would be most welcome.
Thanks
Booey

The doors lock and unlock in sequence. Since you can't lock the door with the key you might want to open the door and spray something like WD-40 into the lock mechanism area. It is possible that a micro-switch is stuck. Spray a little through the key opening also.
You can also try the hard reset again. It is done by removing the negative cable and holding it against the positive cable.
One last thing is you might want to check that the batteries in the remotes are up to snuff.
Give it a go and let us know how it works out.

Thanks everyone,
Here is an update....
I did apply WD40 to the door lock & through the key cylinder & I am now able to lock/unlock the doors using the key. The alarm does set when I lock with the key so i am thankful that I don't have to worry about having to leave the car unlocked.
The fobs still do not work, battery in remote fob is good, does fob does not operate the trunk/boot either.
I did perform a hard reset with no results.

That's good news. It means we are have way there. Since you are sure the FOB batteries are good it might be time to reprogram to the car. It is not unusal for the programming to drop out. Usually a low battery on the vehicle or an extended period of time with the battery disconnected.
I have attached the procedure, be sure to have both fobs in hand when you start, and follow each step and watch the time sequence. An extra few seconds means starting over.
The FOB should open the trunk as well. Also you probably haven't opened the trunk with the key so I would recommend a little WD-40 in the key hole and exercise the key

Greetings All.
The reprogramming was unsuccessful. I attempted it 3 times, fobs still do not work. Tried hard reset too, fobs ions still.
I am unable to lock/unlock the doors using the button on the dash. Gas cap filler door will not open. (I have to open trunk & depress micro switch to allow the door to open)
Last night when the headlights came the "Check rear lights" message came on so I got out & checked the rear lights & found that I have no rear running lights now.
Any thoughts will be much appreciated

OK we might be on track to solving the FOB problem and the lights. On the right hand (passenger side) hinge in the trunk is a bundle of wires that is mounted on the hinge. They are known for breaking due to the flexing. The FOB antenna is part of that bundle and the bundle also affects the rear lighting.
Is the lack of lights the tail lights, license light and upper brake light?
You will need to remove the plastic cover from the hinge and then unwrap the bundle. Using a multi-meter and a couple of needles inserted in the wires before and after the bends you can check for broken wires and repair. You can cut out the broken sections and splice the wires and then remount them.

The lack of lights is that the taillights are not operational. The 3rd bike lights & license plate lights are working properly though sometimes when i depress the bake pedal the "check brake lights" warning does come on. I am going to check the wire bundle shortly & will report back.
