Default Driver door handle dying

Have noticed recently the inside handle on the driver door needs to be extended almost to the limit before the latch will release. Need to unlock the door manually with a pull-up on the lock ... or it often will not come up.

Seems the culprit is the cable ... guess it stretches --- seems to be a few theories. Jaguar only sells the a full assembly including the handle. I'm seeing a few e-bay seller for the cable only.

Has anyone tried just replacing the cable? not something to get apart and want the whole assembly. Prices run from $35 to $60 for what looks to be the same part with different colored ends.

Need to place an order for some OE parts -- third light .. hoses for the XJR and will include the whole handle if need be.

There is a exact length to the cable and the passenger side front is the same . The rear doors are not . Yours may have migrated out of the rear cable barrel retention clip and the inner cable may be OK . Stuff a cloth in as the rear of the cable retention clip can come all the way off ( just pinched on as a original design shortcoming ) and fall inside the door . Careful not to damage the forward clip and if not you can safety wire it .

X300 and X308 cables ( second pic ) are different

If your stretching cables, your issue doesn't seem to be the cable. You need to fix that tension issue.

Be sure to lube the latch/lock mechanism while you're at it. A sticky mechanism is the usual cause of stretched or broken cables in my experience.

Default Driver door handle dying

Driver door handle dying..........A quik note to all of you who have helped me with your suggestions, photos etc. I have finally got me new cable in after removing the latch assy (drivers side.) I am now waiting for the inside handle to arrive via ebay, and some door fasteners. It was a chore, but you gave me the confidence needed to dive in. Thank you all again. Thx again ( King Charles/Metalbasher/Highhorse/Lady Penelope/Steven 300/yeldogt

Another word of action to do while the door panel is off is to throughly lubricate the door lock mechanism. I’d strongly recommend removing it from the door, blow it out with compressed air, clean it out with a $h1t ton of WD40 and then apply a lubricant to the moveable parts. The door lock assembly is likely the beginning of the end in terms of the issues you were experiencing. If it gets gummed up first, you have to apply more force on the exterior and interior door handles to open the door. Everything mechanically related to opening and closing the door goes through the door lock assembly.
