Driver door key barrel

Driver door key barrel
Morning,
Searched through the threads and couldn't find an exact match to this problem:
My driver's door external key lock doesn't appear to do anything. Inserting the key, twisting counterclockwise I get about 45° of motion, springy to a hard stop. Clockwise there's a little resistance about 45°then it'll turn further to about 90°. Kinda mirrors the trunk lock in feel, just significantly less resistance at the "unlock" notch.
However, twisting the key does nothing.
If I press the fob once, the driver's door will unlock, again the rest unlock.
Pressing the fob to lock will lock all doors and the alarm beeps once along with a flash of the 4-ways.
Inside the car, with the ignition on the "locks" key on the climate panel operates the door locks correctly (cycles lock, unlock repeatedly pressed).
With the driver's door open, pressing the lock pin down will briefly lock, then returns itself and the other doors to unlocked. Pressing the lock pin down with the door closed locks all the doors.
It all seems to be behaving itself with exception to the key not doing anything.
I'm guessing the key barrel has no physical connection to the lock itself? (The key isn't worn, I'm well used to 80's Fords with badly worn Tibbe keys but mine are still sharp and nicely profiled).
Would this just be bad or disconnected switches in the key barrel?
Thanks
Phil

Okay, I'll have to do that. The unlock motion has a "twisting a screw into a plastic hole that's been hogged out" kinda feel, y'know that one...
