drivers side window

My mechanic gave me a bill for "replace left door window switch assy"
PART "oem" charged me $298.26 (60 was labor)
The window still doesn't work and now he says to buy another part for $590.00 plus labor.
Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

wish I knew how to do this correctly---I have a 1999 xkj . The drivers side window will not go down. Also the sunroof opens but closes on its own. I was disconnecting the battery for a few mins. and then reconnecting. That seemed to work for awhile but then I decided to get this mechanic. He put in the referenced above part which seemed to work until I locked the door.
I made copies of all the "parts" that were on the Forum and gave them to the mechanic. I'm totally at a loss
Thanks to Forum SuperSport and jamiesxj81--the hardboot worked perfect. Didn't cost any money. Listen to these guys--they are the BEST.

Yes we need more info. If you tell us what is the problem with the window (and/or the switch), we might be able to tell you what you need to buy (and where), and where to take it to get it fixed. Judging by your original post, your "mechanic" is throwing parts at the problem, and not knowing what is really wrong. Window motor (I assume that's the part he wants you to get now?) and the switch rarely go out at the same time (but it is remotely possible).
So let us know what's going on.
BTW....these switches are available in perfect working order from a junkyard (or Ebay!) for 50 bucks. Motors are about a hundred. Who says that a used car (we don't know how many miles it has) needs to have a brand new part?

I think this highlights the problem of maintaining these cars for those with no experience of them-just continuously flinging money & new parts at them until the fault is repaired.
Getting on for $1000 to make a window on an old car move up & down is a tad excessive in the grand scheme of things-it would be better to get the bits off ebay or a breakers at a vastly reduced price & then let the mechanic stick the cheap bits in until the fault is cured, if he has no understanding of Jaguar electrics...
This type of fault is for an auto-electrician with access to the actual circuit diagrams & the ability to trace electrical signals backwards until the fault is found. Blindly shelling out hundreds of dollars on new parts until the fault is cured is really not the best way to sort the problem.

I had this, and a Hard Reset fixed the problem. Cost? $0
PS: After a hard reset, all your computers need to reset. Turn the key on and wait about 30 seconds. Then, start the car and let it idle for about 30 seconds. Try the Window, and hopefully it will work. If not, you are looking at window motor, or computer.
