In case anyone was wondering, kinda as am I, the 17.98 eBay dipstick is too long for the tube, however it stops I have taken two pictures with the pan off on the lift to show how far it does go down. The first picture is from the rear of the car facing forward you can see the filter hanging down, my phone is essentially resting along side the valve body.

The second picture is a similar image however from the front of the car to the back. You can see the low temperature indicator on the stick.

Does anyone have a rough idea, is this where its supposed to be or does it have to drop down farther seems to me based of other vehicles as if it may be about right considering its supposed to take about 4 quarts.

The important thing on the dipstick for the MB 722 tranny is the indication area. The lengh of the rest is not important.
Put the dipstick in the tube and push it to the bottom of the oil pan.
To bring the oil stand in the correct level, you have to warm up the transmission ( about 80°C ) then push it into drive and hold the brake, now you can see the real level of oil.
Hope it helps.

This dipstick will not go into the pan any farther than it currently is. I also have the one for the Chrysler transmissions in my shop as well was going to try that one out tonight. The bottom of the pan seems wrong, there has never been a car in my history of working on cars (about 30 years) that it checks from the very bottom of the pan. I have read that on here and that seems to be the accepted means and no one is having problems so I guess it is just another great case of engineers being too smart for their own good.
According to the workshop manual it says to cycle the trans from park to drive, drive to reverse, and lastly reverse to park to check the fluid.

Ok, i only can tell from my Transmission change in the last weeks on our W210 E55.
I built the dipstick by myself and it works well but its also way too long, if you want i could show you a picture.
The "Meister" of the MB workshop, told me to check the level in drive so the Transmission still have enough oil under all conditons.
Regards from Munich

The dispstick in aardvark64 link doesn't seem right to me.
Here is how it should look:

Yes they do to service personnel. From their tool supplier SPX.
Item #307-379
SPX Catalog - DIPSTICK DIPSTICK 307-379
The Benz supplied tools works the same, I just cut it down to 80cm so a bit is left out of the tube, I'm Jaguar specific and don't work on Benz cars so the extra is useless to me. I think the Benz tool is easier to get hold of too, as Avos posted one on ebay.

The dipstick shouldn't go any further (certainly not to the bottom of the pan!), and by the looks of if you have the right dipstick. You can see a thicker ring (squarish actually) on the upper side of the black plastic where it will stop in the box to keep it at the right level.

Also may purchase another one of the Benz ones with an intact square stop. So many varying opinions and only one thing in the workshop manual which is check with the Jaguar dipstick.

Will the dipstick you are recommending give me precise measurement and can it be just installed and left in the tube? Thanx.

This tool (exactly as pictured) is specifically for this type of gearbox, and it’s not intended to stay in the tube, it is what the MB dealers use.
Just as important is to follow the right filling procedure, so with running engine go thru the gears (so all channels will be filled with oil), and also measure (again with running engine) the oil at 80c (so the upper marks of the lipstick).
The dealer tool will only show the gearbox temp in R or D), and if you don’t have that, you could use an IR Heat gun, but the oil pan will probably read about 10c cooler then the oil inside, so something to take into consideration.

I tried to order the tool for the quick-connectors from SPX - tool was $15 plus $19.39 shipping/handling charge to this tiny U shaped tool.
I can only imagine what the shipping/handling charge will be for a $60 dipstick.
Here is a mercedes benz dipstick on Ebay being offered at $25 and free shipping from Poland to USA - says professional:

Click on image after the dropbox webpage open to see a really large image of the dipstick.
