Default EGR Questions...

Hi All,

I have a 99 XJR. I did a search for EGR removal and cleaning with no success. Would like to know where its located and some instructions and precautions on removing, disassembling, and cleaning the unit. I'm getting P1111 and P0400 dtc's and hoping I can get away with just cleaning the EGR and MAF as I have on previous vehicles I've owned. Thanks in advance for any tips and tricks.

Has your car got the egr valve? look at the rear of the engine, it's located in front of the wiper mech tucked below the throttle body.

Hey, I have a 99 XJR and just got a P0400 EGR FLOW code. I pulled the EGR valve out and it was completely clogged. The EGR valve is directly below the throttle body - not a bad task, about 2 hrs start to finish. On the right side of the engine follow the small exhaust tube connected to the right exhaust manifold - it leads straight to the EGR valve - it helps to use a mirror to see it (two 10mm bolts hold it to the manifold). Once you get the valve out use a mirror and check that the port into the intake is clear as well, mine was completely plugged. I held the throttle pedal down and used a vacuum to remove the carbon cleared from the intake port and thoroughly cleaned with some throttle body cleaner. The EGR valve comes apart to clean the ports and EGR valve and seat.
I haven't taken mine for a test drive, but I hope this will clear my check engine light.

Default Success!

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I was able to locate the EGR, remove it and mine was completely clogged as well! I had to disassemble it to clean it. I had the light reset and so far its been a week with no reoccurrence of the dreaded engine light. My only question now is why does the egr get so clogged and nasty? Are there any steps to prevent this from happening? I've had the car a month and it only has 74k on it, so I'm not exactly sure how she was treated before. Any tips? Thanks again!
