Electric seat memory function

Hi all,
This is my first post, so I just wanted to start by saying thanks to everyone for their contributions here - it's been invaluable in troubleshooting the few minor issues I have with my 1998 XJR so far!
One issue I haven't been able to find any info on is:
My driver's seat used to slide backwards/forward when placing the key into the ignition. It no longer does this. The steering wheel still raises/lowers, and the seat can go back and forth if I use the electric control manually.
It also doesn't work in terms of going backwards/forwards when selecting a different memory setting, but everything else seems to.
Any ideas?

I'm going to resurrect this thread as I've never been able to get the seat working quite properly again.
What doesn't work is two things:
-forwards/backwards seat movement, but only when recalling from memory. All other movement works fine when recalling from memory, and forward/backward moves via the switch just fine.
-easy entry/exit. The steering wheel will move on putting the key into the ignition, but the seat ain't moving - again it's the forward/backwards movement.
I've gone through the diagnostics and can't figure this one out. The diagnostic for the potentiometer suggested I'd be able to identify a faulty one through a failure to illuminate the memory led across the full range of motion, but I can always get it to illuminate. I've tried a hard reset to no avail.

Sorry to resurrect this thread.....
Motorcarman could i please call on your knowledge.....
We have a 1998 XJ8 V8.
The seat positioning works independantly from the side controls and the steering wheel also works independantly.
When setting the memory, the sterring column returns to its position when you put the key in ignition and goes out the way when you take it out.
The seat moves back when you take the keys out BUT when you get into the car or when you press the memory buttons, the seat does nothing! You have to manually set your position every time you get into the car.
this has been an ongoing problem for some time but is getting ot the bugging us stage now lol
I read through your links and the red LED illuminated in all seat positions - would that suggest that potentiometers are okay or could the fact that the steering column memory is working cause a false LED as such?
Would really appreciate any help you can offer xxx
