Engine instantly quit

I drove into my friend's driveway with my '01 XJ8, which was running PERFECTLY at the time. I had to let someone get out of the driveway, so I got back in my car, when I started it, it had a rough idle as if it were starved for gas. If I stepped on the gas pedal, the engine would stop. I attempted to start it a couple more times, and the same thing happened. The engine would run rough for a short time and stall.
This same thing happened for approximately 5 more attempts, until it would do nothing more than crank. Now; the first thing I thought was since my tank was just above the redline, and I was on an incline, that I needed gas. I backed out of the driveway to a level spot, and put 5 gallons of gas in the tank, to no avail. I towed the car to the backyard, and used my OBD scanner to get a p1642 code. I have searched the forums and everyone seems to think my problem is a shorted or open area of my C.A.N.
I'm hoping I can get someone to help guide me to the area that might have caused my problem. Did my fuel pump die? Or a Sensor? Or a Relay? Did my Fuel Filter instantly get clogged? The only pre-existing condition on the car was my dash telling me ABS Trac not available. I can't see how this would involve my engine running, but I thought i'd mention it. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

P1642 is saying you have a CANetwork fault. The only thing I can suggest is to do a hard boot by removing the negative cable from the battery and touching it to the positive post for a few seconds. That will reset all the numerous systems.
While there is no codes for a fuel pumps and they can die, need to test for that with a pressure gauge.
Any fuses blown?
Here is a link to an all encompassing list of 'no start' things to check:

That P1642 CAN error may be a fault of the scanner you used (what brand/model was it?). Did the check engine light come on, or did any other failure mode flash across the dashboard display?
Since the fuel pump is inside the tank, it is cooled by the surrounding fuel. Running near empty can allow it to overheat, especially if it's on its last legs already. Check for fuel pump noise when you first turn ignition on, and check fuel pressure at the rails.

You will waste your time looking for a CAN bus fault. It is an artifact of the scanner conn3ection.
I agree with testpoint and quad- look for a fuel pressure problem. Diagnose it with an inexpensive pressure test guage connected top the test port on the fuel rail- You are looking for about 40 psi at idle.
