I've had my 98 XJR for a few months now and discovered this yesterday while sitting in the park position. I've driven the car easy since I got it. I haven't noticed anything while driving, but yesterday, with it in Park, I gave it some gas and it would go to 3000 rpm and drop down and then go back to 3000 and repeat again........ Is this a safety feature.... or big problem ?? Your answers are greatly appreciated.

No worries...this is normal behavior in park.

 

And, for the record... you should never rev an unloaded engine above 3k.
