Engine swap question....

Engine swap question....
looking at a project situation and this is the status. I did try to search for my answer but came up with nothing exact so I thought I would ask.
2, 2001 XJ's. One an XJR with 50K other an XJ8 with 80K. The 8 had a bad engine, the R has a bad body. The guy (claims he is a mechanic) swapped the complete, engine, trans, wiring harness, control modules and computer/ECM from the R to the 8. It starts, runs and drives but wont shift out of first.
He never said if he swapped the dual fuel pumps (which has to be done) but is saying he talked to Jaguar (which I doubt since they dont tend to give advice over the phone) and they claim the transmissions computer needs to be reset at a cost of $400-500.00.
Any thoughts on this ? Its a package deal for both cars so if I needed the other items (fuel pumps) I should be able to swap them too but it seemed like he did everything right (Im assuming he forgot to tell me about the pumps) so Im wondering what he might have missed before I dive into it (possibly).

There was an exhaustive discussion on the XK8/R forum a couple months ago with the same swap but seems like different MY engines. Don't remember how it came out but it was indeed complex involved harness issues. I can tell you that you are not going to solve it with a TCM reflash as the 8/R used entirely different harnesses, transmissions and TCM's.
Search some more or maybe someone will come up with the link.
Are you aware of the 'wild card' search function? XK8 will come up with an error but XK8* will work.

from what I know, the frankenjag will have required the R dash - all looms from it to engine and trans. Reason being, all modules from BCM, TCM ECM talk to and thru the IPK.
Having re assembled an R into a new bodyshell, I'm familiar with the process. The car requires all - no shortcuts.
Also, if changing the BCM - all modules inc seats, doors etc will need to go in the car for it to work without issue.
Big job to do right.

I guess if you got the whole mess for so little money -- and you had a lot of time.
Obviously -- if you have every part from the R it will fit into the 8 -- and you have the skill and time to transfer all that is needed to make it work.
What if the R's transmission is faulty ? -- you could easily spend 2k fixing it.
And the car will never be worth as much as a original 8.

I guess it depends how familiar you are with these cars. I did the 4.0 to 4.2 swap being totally green in Jags and that was tough. I think it would've been easier to have two cars and swap, but with this scenario you're trying to backtrack as to what the previous owner did which will be a bigger pita especially if he halfassed it.
