excessive fuel usage and wheel knock.
1998 jaguar XJR returning 14.5 mpg. Have been told its an oxygen sensor fault. No obd codes. anyone had similar problems.
If I rock the back wheels side to side there is play as if wheel bearings are shot. I've been told that it is end float and shouldn't worry....true ?
Regards

RE: excessive fuel usage and wheel knock.
there is slight play.. on both sides. which is normal..
and on a 10 year old super charged engine.. may only see close to 18-maybe 20
but i wud get the fuel trim read at a jag dealer.. to insure you dont have any little airleaks.. which can cause an excess amount of fuel.. usage.. super charger square gasket tends to leak.. and the inlet circules as well.. also.. check that the fuel pressure regulator hose is not pinched.. or colapsed.. which can cause hi fuel pressure.. and not give a code..

Those Jag techs know their stuff. Listen to him on the fuel consumption issue.
I would not be comfortable with play in the rear wheels. Get the wheels in the air and check for play in each wheel. If the bearings are beginning to go, change them. If you don't they will take out the hub carriers and then you are talking big bucks.

That all depends how much play we are talking about. Rear wheels on the XJ have a bit of play up and down but side to side play is not good. Not likely wheel bearing for that movement. More likely the rear axles. You need to be under the car while moving wheel side to side and see what is moving.
