Unhappy Fried ECM 98 Jaguar Xj8l 4.0 is the dealer the only option if too fried to be repaire

Hey,
I bone headedly gave someone a jump and my feline friend hasnt started up since. Afyer two months in the shop, I was told the ECM is fried. Is there anyway around going to the dealer to program another ECM from another jaguar?

There are independents with WDS/IDS that can reprogram. You need to match the numbers , including the three digit code, like LJA1410AC/020 or whatever is listed on the VCATS list near the spare tire for best results.

Another thought: contact ASI and explain what happened, ask if it is worth testing to see if rebuild is possible. That would be the cheapest fix if it can be done.

Thanks RJ237,
I matched that magic number up now I have a question. If I get a used ecm from ebay do you think I would have any success? I tried shipping the ecm in to be rebuilt they said it was too fried and taxed me $150. Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear that. An expert, like motorcaman would be able to answer that question better than most of the members, like myself, but I think it will have to be linked to the other modules with proper software.

A good used ECM will work if the numbers match AND you perform an 'immobilization setup'. Basically it tells the modules to 'shake-hands' with the 'new-guy' so the engine will start. I have had to install good-used ECMs to get sensors operating again when the ECM circuits 'fried' internally.

I had one recently that faulted BOTH VVTs and it was NOT a wiring or actuator fault. I installed a replacement ECM, performed the immo-setup and it did NOT fault the VVTs. I re-installed the old ECM, performed 'immo-setup' and the fault returned!!!! It was a faulty ECM.

WDS or IDS will perform the setup. I don't know if other diagnostic machines will work.

Default Thanks

Thanks Motorcarman! Other than the ecm computer number and vin info, what constitutes whether the cpu will work for the car or not? How much should I look to pay? I have seen as low as 50 bucks and as high as $350. Any suggestions on how to buy one?

See if you can find one on ebay and buy using paypal. That way you have a guaranteed refund if it's NG.
