Front end hammering (again) 03 XJ8
I’m sure everyone is familiar with the shock mounts on the front end wearing out and failing. Thus, the “hammering “ when hitting bumps in the road, or a speed bump, etc..
It seems I just replaced them, about 8 months ago, but the amount of road repairs being done around my area may have seemingly shortened their life.
Can you add the older style rubber bushings to the new style, pre-pressed mounting plates?
anyone ever tried that?
It seems a shame to have to discard these practically new shock mounts.
Do I have options here?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi,
Does one of these threads answer your questions? What kind of suspension does your car run - CATS or non-CATS?

Non-CATS, no adaptive control. So I was hoping that I could possibly replace, or just add-to the existing bushings that are on my mount plates. I bought them from Parts Geek as an OEM replacement, but they have the hard, yellowish bushings that seem to wear out quickly. At least it seems like they did, I would think that they would last longer than 8 months, although they were not expensive (around $45 each).
Thank you for the thread links! They seem to address the CATS systems that I don’t have.

Maybe I get your question wrong, but I never found a place where you can buy the original orange-colored bushings for the mount plates separately. Or do you have some old-style bushings laying around on the shelf?
As there are plenty of replacement shock mount plates available for vehicles without adaptive damping it might be an option for you to get a different brand of mount plates than your last ones. E.g. the Meyle parts, which are excellent quality and cheap to get at PartsGeek.
The whole "swapping bushes and metal sleeves"-thing discussed in the thread links is only because there are no replacement mount plates for vehicles with adaptive damping (except for the genuine, but horrendously expensive Jaguar parts).

The Myerle ones are what I bought 8 months ago, these are what I was thinking of to add to my existing plates. Just wanted o know if you, or anybody, has done this. Thank you for your responses!!

The "red" ones (red outside skin only, orange foam) are "soft" and perfectly fit the Jag top mounts. Their softness is also very close to the original ones. They also have "white" (light brown actually) bushes which they call "medium" but they are considerably harder than the original Jag bushes.
The correct bush thickness to get is 0.75", p/n RE-BR-5153-R75 (the one shown on the picture is 0.50" thick). The foam bush centre hole diameter is 15 mm and that also fit perfectly the centre steel sleeves (15 mm OD) on my CATS top mounts. If the centre sleeves on the non-CATS top mounts are also 15 mm OD, then these foam bushes will also be good for non-CATS top mounts.

I had both the Mehle and the URO replacements (M on right, U on left). Both worked well and stopped the hard rattle, but I did not keep the car long enough afterwards to have a failure in either. Might try the URO instead of what you have on the side with the worst rattle. I wouldn't bother trying to rebuild given the low price on the URO, and certainly not with the hard neoprene that were being sold a couple of years ago -- gets very hard during cold weather.

You can get them here: BUMP RUBBER, .750" PUCK, RED. I recently rebuilt my CATS top mounts with these.
@3timejag: ah ok, now I get you! Well, I can confirm what JHartz already said - the neoprene / poly bushes do work well when new. But within weeks/months they get softer when warm and much harder when cold. Then they develop the same rattle again due to which they had been installed in the first place.
So either you try the URO parts or rebuild your mount plates with the bumb rubbers which M. Stojanovic is referring to.
Cheers, Alexander
